Always nice to see growth! Too bad the Airport Improvement Fee is increasing, but I guess someone has to pay for it. Now all we need is public transit to and from the airport.

Just found a map on the new airport website showing their new business park layout, it also shows where the Holiday Inn Express will go and it look like after this expansion, they'll be expanding it a bit more too



And ps, I created a facebook page to promote that Delta Airlines should fly to YYT, please like and spread the page to help make the cause a reality!

For those of you following the construction of the Team Gushue Highway Extension, here's an update on the progress of the 2013-season tendered construction ( 3 underpasses ).

Work has resumed on the Redmond's Road area, completion set for August 2014. This is the area where the most work has been done. I notice that a lot of the work seems to be done on the weekends. This picture is from Sunday morning and there's a dozen or so workers on site.



Collector Road has not resumed yet for 2014 season



Work has commenced on the sides for the Old Pennywell Road underpass. I noticed a stream running out of the right-side site, will that affect the side-footing in the future?




No word yet on 2014-season tenders, rumours are for 2 overpasses at Topsail Road and one at Blackmarsh Road. If they tender in August as in past years, probably finished at the end of 2015 for these.

Does anyone know when they are planning on installing traffic lights at the Hebron Way, Torbay Rd and White Rose Drive intersection? This has quickly become a life or death kind of intersection when trying to make a left turn into Hebron Way. Hebron Way has been opened now for over a year and its crazy there sometimes trying to turn left. I had inquired some time ago with the ward councillor (of the previous council) of the area and he wasn't too concerned over it too much. He said it was the responsibility of the developers to install the lights. I guess its gonna have to take a bad accident or death there to get something moving on that.

It's already a chore to get into it northbound on Torbay Road, and damn near impossible to get across from White Rose Drive (where a lot of customers are coming from after shopping at Stavanger).

Something will give, hopefully before an accident.

I emailed Danny Breen, the Ward councillor for the area and also the Mayor. Got responses from both almost immediately stating that lights should be installed this spring or early summer. Time will tell though whether this will happen and if public safety is a concern to them.

Traffic lights are a convenience, not a lifesaver. I wouldn't even hesitate to say that traffic lights kill. Projects converting signalized intersections to multi-way stops or roundabouts have reduced vehicle-pedestrian collisions by 25% and 70% respectively. There's no reason that particular intersection, with its 50 km/h speed limit and ample room for a roundabout, should have been built the way it was. Adding signals now will let drivers exit Hebron Way and White Rose Drive more easily, but it also promotes driver inattention. Every one of the top 10 intersections for vehicle collisions in St. John's and Mount Pearl has traffic signals. That's not a coincidence; the signals and drivers' preference for intersections that have them are why the intersection of Torbay Road and Stavanger Drive made the top 10 in 2013 and the intersection of Torbay Road and White Rose Drive didn't.

It's as simple as this... A five lane intersection with no traffic lights increases the chances of accidents and one with traffic lights will decrease the chances. Even with lights however there will be accidents as many people in this town are terrible terrible drivers.

I was just browsing around YouTube and happened upon this video of the extension/retrofit of Victoria's new regional link in Australia. The progress they're making looks incredible, and I can only imagine how great the Avalon would benefit from the good ol' rail again. Traffic management, city flow, densification, separation of sprawl and city as well as the interconnectivity between all the municipalities out to Gander would flourish. Not to mention the environmental impact! Tis but a dream for the future

It never ceases to amaze me the idiot decisions of our St. John's City Council.
They installed a roundabout and other traffic calming systems like speed bumps and traffic narrows all along Old Topsail Road to help calm traffic and to force people to take other routes in and out of downtown. Of course now everyone has decided to use other streets to get to downtown as Old Topsail Road is annoying as hell to drive on. The roundabout is fine but its the speed bumps and traffic narrows that are so annoying. So its no wonder traffic has slowed down there. People are now using Waterford Bridge Road and Craigmiller Ave instead. I guess they will put traffic calming on those next and then wonder why there is a backlog of traffic downtown of people trying to find alternate routes. And by the way, suggesting people use Pitts Memorial Drive an option is not the answer unless you live in Kilbride. No one wants to drive all the way in there and then have to backtrack out again to get to Cornwall Heights or places like that. And whether the city likes it or not, Waterford Bridge Road, Old Topsail Road and Craigmiller Ave are all main feeder roads to downtown and if you screw up that, you are going to have more traffic problems created than solutions. Think harder city council.

Absolutely agree. This was a stupid kneejerk reaction to a vocal minority (some, well known public people), and defies common sense.

If everyone that complains gets "traffic calming", there will be nothing but gridlock.

Where I live there are lots of roundabouts - people will always go the wrong way around them sometimes (ignorance & carelessness) - this tends to happen when there is very little traffic and they are the only car around. My own experience is that they are much safer than stop signs, but are best suited to 4-way intersections; they are better for traffic flow, the only problem is that they are slightly worse for pedestrians.
