Can of worms

Ignoring better judgment, I have decided to open a can of worms concerning the "race" between SLC and Sandy to build a Broadway theater.

First, I think a race between the two cities is inviting disaster, potentially drying up scarce capital between the two projects so neither gets built.

Second (and this is the wormy part), I think a big piece of the argument is being side-stepped. A Broadway theater Broadway productions, many of whom will offend the sensibilities of the people in the South County and the northern part of Utah County. I vividly remember a few years ago insisting that a long-time, dear friend of mine, who lives in Alpine, see "Mama Mia" the next time he was in New York. He did...and walked out halfway through. When I asked him about the show, he gave me a very rationale explanation why he left, which made perfect sense. Not my taste, but I respect his. The point is that much Broadway theater is not going to be well received by the local patrons of the arts in Sandy.

Next is the economics of the argument...Broadway tickets are expensive, usually the province of people who do not have kids at home or young, urban professionals. Yes, there is a lot of people of both ilks in the South Valley and Northern Utah County, but the proportion of this group to the overall population is much higher in SLC. And people who live close to the DT area will want to dine as well as go to the theater. The dining options in Sandy are not great (with the exception of Tiburon and a few others). Finally, If you eliminate shows like "Rent" and "Mama Mia" from the playbill, you will lose a significant audience as well.

I hope I am not offending anyone with this argument. That is not my purpose. But I think the questions I'm raising are valid. If I am wrong, please show me where I've missed the boat.

Thank you RFPCME! I couldn't have said it better myself! I think you're spot on with this argument!

Personally, I would like to see Broadway shows like Gypsy, Chicago, AvenueQ, Spring Awakening, Spamalot, etc. Something other than Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat.

I agree wtih you COMPLETELY, RFPCME.
I hope that Coroon has enough sense to tell Sandy to shove it and give Salt Lake the broadway theater.
BTW, this is SORTA on topic but not.... does anybody know when and where WICKED! is playing?

IF the Perineum project is actually built in Sandy, I think there is only one business model that might be successful--Tuacahn in St. George. Nothing edgy, nothing controversial, just 'family-friendly' entertainment at a good value--programming like The Sound of Music, or High School Musical.

I still give the Perineum very low odds of actually being built in current form. I don't think the demand is there for the towers, and Sandy has already been given a pass by national groups who operate Broadway theaters--said groups are waiting for Salt Lake City's plan I think.

It will actually be in Salt Lake! April 8, 2009 through May 3, 2009 at the Capitol Theatre. I may have to get tickets as I'll be out there for job interviews at that time...

Permanent locations: New York, Chicago, LA.

Yep, my wife loves "Wicked" and she can't wait to go see it. She even has the soundtrack.

If a Sandy theatre gets built, it'll mainly be used for high school graduations for the newly split off "East Jordan" school district.

When conning lobbying the legislature to get the stadium built in Sandy, they claimed that the stadium would be in constant use because of the huge number of concerts and other events that would, in addition to soccer games, be held there so regularly. Now, in addition to every concert in the state being held at the soccer stadium, every theatrical production in Utah is going to be staged in Sandy as well.

They seem to have an If we build it, everyone will come mentality in Sandy when it comes to these things: "Since there are currently x number of concerts, plays and trade shows held annually throughout the region, there will soon be x number of events held in Sandy once we finish our new stadium and theater and amphitheater and expo center."

News Flash Sandy: Not everthing belongs in your town, and just because you steal lobby for it doesn't mean everyone and everything will magically flock there.

Every time I think about Tom Dolan I throw up a little.

But, as awful as he is, he's really effective at working our broken system and getting exactly what he wants all of the time.

I'm convinced that if he were mayor of Salt Lake, we would already have a brand new airport paid for entirely with pork spending and we'd probably be home to the tallest building on earth as well. Oh, and all of Sugarhouse would have been demolished to make way for a Lowe's, Walmart and Sam's Club.

Arkhitektor: You forgot about Sugarhouse having Check City's and Bail Bonds on each corner, as well as a statue of Totally Awfulsome Super Del in the middle of the intersection at 11th E. and 21st S.

yeah, damn funny, but I can't take credit for it. I've heard it called that here before, but don't remember by whom. I think it describes this project perfectly.

IT is because the way Sandy wants to develop is a major threat to Downtown SLC. In the mid to late 1980's a groupd called the Urban design Coalition (made up of local officials, business owners, etc) created a poster called "Bad decision threaten". It depicts a view of main street looking south. In the foreground is completely decaying downtown with flags at half staff, the brigham young station had Brigham hand up on his hand, weeds were growing in the middle of the road, a sky bridge crossed main street, etc. In the background was Sandy, a shiny, new downtown with tall buildings, modern architecture, green mountain sides, etc. While this may be a bit extreme, at least some degree of the poster will happen if Sandy starts to develop the way they appear to be going. Only, they don't want all of the negative that is associated with being urban (homeless shelters, blood banks, food banks, panhandlers, drugs, increased crime, etc.). Sandy needs to have a come to jesus moment and realize what their role in the world is, to be the best suburban community that they can be. I think this is what their citizens want, not to be another downtown. Unfortunately, any investment is good investment in the eyes of their electorate and they are selling out the we being of their city for a bit of an increase in City coffers.

Utah Freedom Memorial

Utah Freedom Memorial
The State of Utah could soon have it's own Memorial. This would be a state-wide monument honoring all of Utah's military. The final site will be announced soon.

I bet this will be placed in some gross suburban area like South Jordan or Herriman. I think it best to place these kinds of destinations in close proximity to one another. Even within walking distance of each other. For example, on capitol hill. therefore those interested in viewing these types of government monuments won't have to make so many trips around the valley in order to see all of them. I really hope it will be located somewhere in the Capitol City (Salt Lake). That seems to make the most sense.
