I'm just stating the obvious. Anywho I have a feeling we will hear of more new routes as the year goes on.

Look for new service to Miami (American), New Orleans (Southwest) Raleigh-Durham (American), maybe Albquerque (Southwest), maybe St Louis (Southwest). What would be nice is if Southwest would add Amarillo, Corpus Christi and return to Midland/Odessa

A 777 will be coming in from Abu Dhabi as well for F1 staff.

Also heard that COTA is contracting out helicopter service to and from the track from ABIA. ABIA is determining where to establish the helipad terminal. They're trying to use the Texas National Guard ramp. The contract calls for 300 flights using 6-8 helicopters. That's a lot of traffic over a 4 day period.

Should be an interesting week for ABIA.....
The F1 track is basically next to the airport. So COTA must be expecting some awful traffic delays to want so many short helicopter trips.

Goodness, you would think at this rate they would start terminal expansion for the east wing. It seems like we are going to be needing those new gates sooner than later. Anybody know when we will see construction on the east wing?

Ah, I thought they might utilize the South Terminal. Cool.

It will make for some nice plane watching (and pics with the planes low over the city) with those widebodies. Certainly there will be a 747 or two?

Also, are you sure the flights are coming in from Sao Paulo, or going to SP? Because the Brazilian GP is the week following Austin's F1 race. The prior race is Abu Dhabi and it's 2 weeks before Austin.

Update......Had nothing to do with F1.......JetBlue brought the bird in on company business and it flew out to JFK this evening.
Would have been nice to see a pic of that.

What was Jetblue's business here?

And yes, the SA forum is slow. No one, including myself, takes the time to post every time the city appears in the top ten on a list, the opening of hqs (U.S., regional, global), the increased traffic at SAT or every new direct flight, Eagle Ford impacts, growth at Port SA, food trucks, festivals, or many other things worthy of being mentioned in the forum. Hopefully, someone will pick it up soon.

Dude seriously, i used a quote u posted earlier and fact is you were less than enthusiastic and overly pessimistic about us getting a direct flight going as far as saying Austins reasons for trying to get that D.C. direct flight are weak. Either way in the end we did get the direct flight which puts us by this summer at 40 direct flights. Sorry you are not elated with glee. Now im moving on to other airport related topics like aiport expansion.

Are there any draft plans or renderings that show future airport expansion phases?

Oh, ya I remember seeing an old plan that had all of their plans for the new terminal in the middle of the airport with some sort of tunnel connecting to the current terminal or something. It was pretty cool. I just went to google to try to find it again, and can't for the life of me remember where to find it. It is probably somewhere in this thread, but this is a pretty long thread to dig through.

Airliners.net might have a photo of it. That website is fascinating. You can search by plane type, airline and even by city.

Thumbs down

Thanks guys, I appreciate it.

Looking at the plan it looks like they should start terminal expansion fairly soon. They are currently working on the apron area.
