Here's a photo that's just titled "A front view of the Yale Apt. building set on a slight hill, with a recessed front entrance area." No date or address is listed, but now odinthor has identified it.

The building in the (left) background of your parents' photograph doesn't appear to match the building at 975 Wilshire. The corner of the building in your photograph is angled.
(I believe the term is cut-off corner) maybe

I think the picture was taken in Lincoln Park, Long Beach.

There was a Yale Hotel at 143 W 1st Street, adjacent to the park.

The portion of the building I've circled is I think the top floors of the Security Pacific National Bank building at 102-110 Pine Ave.

This is the description:

Shows a woman and several children by a display with a sign that reads "Belmont Branch Library." They are probably participating in a special event sponsored by the library. The three girls are wearing aprons and have cooking materials on the table in front of them. The four boys are dressed up and have a model sailboat and boat making materials on the table in front of them. The Columbia Building, Yale Hotel, and Heartwell Building and other structures are visible in the background. DATE NOTES: Circa 1920's

I believe Noir_Noir nailed it (with supporting material from Hoss). We're looking east from Lincoln Park. The Yale is at the northeast corner of Pacific and 1st. The belltower you see a block away is (still!) at the northwest corner of Pine and 1st. The Heartwell Bldg. was at the northwest corner of Ocean and Pine. This is a very familiar area through my whole life, and I laugh at myself for not recognizing it sooner!

I can't believe you found these photos. Looks like it definitely is where my parents' picture was taken! Wish they were still alive so I could show them what I found...

It seems to me that we had a post on a downtown truck stop some years back, but nothing turned up in a search.....


.....I pulled up the '57 Yellow Pages, they had no classification for "Truck Stop".....I did find this....




....note Paul's Signal Service at 1389 E. 7th St., this would be the n.w. corner of 7th and Alameda.....a 1960 permit....





.....the permit included a sketch of the improvements....




The sketch does not indicate pump islands, but prior permits confirm a Signal Oil station at the site, so this facility was possibly the truck stop in the photo....the site is now a portion of a large parking lot for L.A. Metro buses.

Born March 4, 1939, in Chester, Ill., he was the son of the late Ruth (Knowles) and Chester Greer. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years: Antoinette (Brady) Greer.

I have to say I really wasn't expecting a followup on Gary O. Greer. Nicely done. I also want to say I hope Mr. Greer enjoyed a fulfilling life. I know I'm speculating here but it seems like he was a solid fellow.

Unless I'm mistaken, this the home of William F. Markham located at 1453 N. Vine Street. ..If so, this is by far the best photograph of the fountain and gardens!



Most interesting (to me) is when it (Markham residence) was knowned as the Commonwealth House, a meeting place for various Communist organizations.

The Bonner Fruit company's eight acre tract was "just west of the Southern Pacific Depot" in Lankershim (LA Times 5/25/1925); and the Southern Pacific Depot in Lankershim was at what is now 11275 Chandler Boulevard.

New info to me! The mention of Lankershim meant "boulevard" to me. I had no idea it was once a place name. So, wikipedia has a page with some of this interesting info:

Lankershim and West Lankershim are historical names for an area in what is now the greater North Hollywood section of the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles County, California.

Lankershim was originally named Toluca. The center of the town, laid out by James Boon Lankershim and his brother-in-law, I.N. Van Nuys, was the "intersection of present day Chandler Blvd. and Lankershim Blvd." Lankershim agreed to be annexed to the City of Los Angeles in 1923. The intent of annexation was to connect the settlement's access to the water from the Los Angeles Aqueduct system. West Lankershim agreed to be annexed to the City of Los Angeles in 1919. West Lankershim has been described as the "Valley Plaza area of North Hollywood" or as basically what is now called Valley Village.

The name of the local post office was changed from Toluca to Lankershim in 1912. In 1925 the population of Lankershim was 2,000. The current name North Hollywood was adopted August 15, 1927 to capitalize "on the glamour of Hollywood to the southeast." The post office address was legally changed that day and "all the signs along Magnolia Boulevard, Lankershim Boulevard and other large highways had been painted out from signs and the new name substituted."

This image is flipped. Should look like this:



This is looking west on Seventh from about Hill. The three main large structures at center are the (backsides of) the Brockman and Bronson bldgs at Seventh and Grand, and the big guy is the Athletic Club. Under construction, foreground, I'm not sure. It's now the site of the 1928 Foreman & Clark building. I'd guess this image dates to about 1918 (it's after the Ville de Paris went up, which you can be glimpsed behind the under-construction fellow, and which was put up in 1917).
