This intersection in Cochrane is always busy and has needed a serious upgrade for many years. The problems are that Cochrane only has one North-South route (Highway 22), one East-West route (Highway 1A), and the steep Bow River valley. Combine that with a growing town that has grown to 25 000 in 2016 from 17 580 in 2011, and congestion has been a chronic problem.

Question about the 407 though... Went through on the same trip (wanted to avoid the traffic, willing to eat the tolls) and never got billed. My understanding was that the ramp cameras took pictures of your plate getting on/off?

If you have out-of-province plates, it might take them longer to get the bill you. Or the camera couldn't get a good pic and you got off scot free.

Widening Highway 401 to Keep People Moving
April 10, 2017

Expansion Project will Help Manage Congestion and Improve Commutes
Ontario is creating jobs and keeping people moving by widening 18 kilometers of Highway 401 from the Credit River in Mississauga to Regional Road 25 in Milton.

The Highway 401 Expansion project includes adding HOV lanes in each direction and widening the existing six lane configuration to:

Twelve lanes from the Credit River to Winston Churchill Boulevard
Ten lanes from Winston Churchill Boulevard to Highway 407 ETR / Highway 401 interchange
Twelve lanes from Highway 407 ETR / Highway 401 interchange to James Snow Parkway
Ten lanes from the James Snow Parkway to Regional Road 25
Widening the 401 will relieve congestion, allow for a more efficient transportation and flow of goods, and will help accommodate continued population and employment growth in the region.

The province has issued a Request for Qualifications to design, build and finance the Highway 401 expansion project—the first step in getting construction underway.
The project is being delivered under Infrastructure Ontario’s Alternative Financing and Procurement model, which transfers risks associated with design, construction and financing of the project to the private sector.
The average daily traffic for the Highway 401 in the Peel and Halton Region is approximately 108,000 to 188,000 vehicles per day.
Ontario is committing over $2.1 billion to repair and expand provincial highways and bridges across the province.

A30 saves about 30-55 mins if you're traveling between Ontario/Maritimes, depending on time of day and such. It's been a great upgrade and sorely needed.

Cool photos. I got stuck in a traffic jam last night on the 403 as the eastbound lanes were reduced to a single lane so they could lift the new girders into place.

My drive today on Highway 144 near Sudbury.

They recently repaved the highway. I think this year they may be adding another layer to it.

Turn the volume down, as there is a lot off wind noise.

So, we are not loosing the access forever. They are just going to make the access better overall.

Province Investing $390 Million to Twin and Improve Safety
Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal
April 26, 2017 10:35 AM

The additional $390 million will allow the province to add three sections of twinned 100-series highways to the existing highway plan. Government will also build the Burnside Connector. All four projects will be complete within seven years.

The four projects are:
-- Highway 101, Three Mile Plains to Falmouth, including the Windsor Causeway, 9.5 kilometres
-- Highway 103, Tantallon to Hubbards, 22 kilometres
-- Highway 104, Sutherlands River to Antigonish, including Barneys River, 38 kilometres
-- construction of the four-lane, divided Burnside Connector (Highway 107) between Burnside to Bedford, 8.7 kilometres.
