An open letter to Shape: when will AMB get a grocery store? Just found out that Shape's sister project in City of Lougheed has a Price Smart grocery store, whereas the residents of AMB have been here for almost 3 years, and not one grocery store on site. A recent market survey showed 61% of AMB residents want an on site grocery store. Seems like it is no where even close to getting one. I think Shape can do better to serve the residents of AMB. I am tired of dragging my nanny card crossing two busy streets 3X a week to whole food since my fridge is ridiculously small. All we have are 5 coffee shops and a weed shop which is hardly wholesome living. Personally I am not expecting large scale shop like T & T or Price Smart , even a small corner store which carries fresh produce will meet the need in the mean time. After all AMB is suppose to be a master planned community which meets most needs of its residents.

Here we go again. 1st world problems. 2 grocery stores, both within 2 minutes of walking distance, but crossing a roadway is an issue…

Dont think u live here , when you have a super small fridge which has poor circulation , which you cannot over stuff . Any produce which touches the back of the fridge gets frozen. Yes it is a huge problem when our sister neighbour by the same developer which is not even occupied yet can enjoy the convenience of an on site grocery store.

I do agree with the fridges in new condos being tiny. You can barely fit anything.

However, I don't know having another full blown grocery store will be viable at brentwood considering the competition. Maybe a H-Mart Express or a Circle-K will be amazing.

google says it is a 7min walk from Brentwood Tower 1 - Whole foods. thats 1/2 of the goal of a "15min city" even.

So the problem is the fridge.

where would they put it? the old mall seems off-limits for any retailers to open as there is a plan to completely redo the entire old mall.

Town centre area was expected to be over 50k full build out. Another grocer (fresh produce like Kins) or supermarket doesn't seem unreasonable closer to Beta Ave.

I mean, there is 5 or 6 grocers within 1 block radius of Vancouver City Hall. Similar situation in the West End. What you're seeing is a shift of auto-oriented grocers and urban living in Burnaby.

google does not consider traffic light wait, if you miss a light it is 4 min wait. And then another 2 min wait to cross the other major street. those who does not live here does not know the true nuisance

That would be just fine, any smaller grocery outlet which can easily fit any CRU
without major renovation , and carry fresh produce which is what most people need.

There are plenty of smaller CRU in AMB . The old Starbuck next to London Drugs is perfect, close to traffic and parking. Easily relocated if needs be, I am talking about a Kin Market which carry fresh produce and does not require much renovation. There are also lots CRU at base of Tower 3 which is not occupied.

There is a full scale grocer at the Grosvenor development at the corner of Alpha/Dawson, but then at least 5 years away. There got to be better solution in the mean time.

You should e-mail both Kin's and Shape with the suggestion, especially since there was a Kin's Farm Market at the mall before redevelopment.

Thanks for the suggestion. I am hoping there are Shape employees who read this post and I am sure they do. This is the voice of 61% of residents.

Tower 2 here. Cook everyday, walk to grocery store maybe every three days. It's not that bad at all. I really appreciate having both wholefoods and save on foods so close to me 😊.

but most of the old mall will be closed down for the renovation. Kins Market would fit anywhere but its been quite a while and no one seems to want to open in TAB, so much of the new spaces are still sitting empty.

will all those SFHs ever be replaced with more density? it's kind of weird to see a huge development like TAB with a bunch of houses across the street and alleys.

The grand bargain at it's finest. Burnaby has been one of the strongest adherents to the grand bargain this century, can't say I expect it to change any time soon.
