Bristolian, interesting map!

It shows that at Sunset and Gardner, there are P.E. tracks going west on Sunset to about Crescent Heights. Has that been mentioned, or any photographs posted, before? I know at some time there was info about some kind of line that ran down Crescent Heights from Sunset to Santa Monica Blvd. and that's why the east and west turns are branched off.

This line was known as the Laurel Canyon Line and was built by the Cahuenga Valley Railroad in 1896 as a narrow-gauge, steam powered operation from Sunset & Gardner to Laurel Canyon Blvd. It was electrified c.1900 by Pasadena & Pacific Ry., standard gauged in 1909 by Los Angeles Pacific Ry. and converted by PE to motor coach operation in 1924. Offhand, I can't remember seeing any photos, but the line enjoyed enough service that one might turn up in contemporaneous newspaper articles, etc.

AFIAK, the trackage on Crescent Heights Blvd. apparently was non-revenue, used for routing equipment to/from West Hollywood (nee Sherman) car house or other parts of the system.

Sorry I can't be more help.

Bristolian, when you first posted the map it was HUGE (too huge actually) but now it's too small to see what Martin Pal and Henry Huntington are talking about.
Could you crop the map to the area they're discussing or perhaps provide a link to the larger scanned map?

As a reminder here's what Gardner Junction looked like in 1936.

Gardner Junction today. You can clearly see the diagonal where the rail-tracks used to be.

Hmm. .does anyone know what is being built on the southeast corner of Sunset and Sierra Bonita?

Yeah, I'm having all kinds of trouble with sizing on Imugr. I added a link where the image can be downloaded and viewed in detail.

Here's a crop of that area:

Spotted this lone Ionic column hanging out at 4204 - 4206 S. Central Avenue. There was once a bowling alley here that was demolished in the late 60s. I wondered if it was a strangely short one leftover from the previous building.

There's one on the right side as well, with an eagle on top of it.

Speaking of lost bowling alleys, this company sells t-shirts with the original graphics, many from the L.A. area. I have no affiliation with them, I just like the shirts.

A few examples:

They had a big healthy tree there in 2007:

So they took it out, put in a new tree, and promptly killed the new tree.

Snix, I ran 4204-06 S. Central Ave. on the city Bldg. & Safety site, and could not find any records for a bowling alley....the '49 Green Book lists the building as a cafe/nightclub called The Last Word (this was the heart of the Central Ave. jazz scene, the Dunbar Hotel was directly opposite)....

Indeed I do. The south side of Sunset Blvd. from Curson to Sierra Bonita and from Sierra Bonita to Gardner was a strip of one or two story businesses like this 7500 Sunset Blvd. address photo.

LoopNet

Sometime around 2019, I think, the businesses all started closing down and a big construction project was announced. The same company, but two different looking apartment buildings with retail space at ground level at this site.

The two buildings, identified as Greystar's Rae on Sunset Apartments in Hollywood, located at 7500 and 7550 Sunset Boulevard, are a combined total of 200 apartments, 127 in the larger building and 73 in the triangular building.

Two views of the buildings. The first is a rendering facing SW from the 7500 address POV. The second is a recent photo facing SE from the 7550 address POV.

All info and photos, except one noted above, from:

Henry Huntington and Bristolian, thank you both for the helpful information.

P.S.: I love the bowling shirts, too, Bristolian!

Good eye Snix and ScottyB.

Here's a clearer look at both columns.

GSV..4204-06 S. Central Ave.

I happened upon this amazing photograph yesterday on eBay that was taken on the roof of the Frank Wiggins Trade School in 1935.

I especially like that we get a look at the surrounding area as well.

eBay

The Frank Wiggins building is still there but extensively fucked up remodeled. All the windows are covered over! Go to this old post to see it. . .

. .or simply look at it here.

Southeast corner of Venice and Olive.

It looks like one of those monolithic bunkers in Berlin during WWII.

Here's a reminder of what it used to look like.

usc or ucla archive

I wonder if the outer layer that covers up all the windows could be removed someday...(possibility, or wishful thinking?)

And speaking of Palm Springs.

What is Marilyn Monroe doing in Palm Springs with Roy Cohn?

eBay 1947

Seriously, does anyone recognize the man?

Whoever the man is the eBay seller is asking $500.00

Top center is the 1909 Hotel Darby, now the Grace Apartment Hotel at 234 W Adams. Flyingwedge's full post has more info plus old and new pictures. There's also a history of the site in GW's Adams Boulevard blog.
