I want to make sure people are not confused or are getting the wrong information. For some reason, I get the impression that people think all the skyscrapers in the image are in Sharjah. Let me clarify this.

The area circled in red is Sharjah:

The area circled in green is in Dubai. It is the area along Dubai Creek, but most of the mid-rises you see are in Deira:

The area circled in blue includes the buildings along Sheikh Zayed Road and the Dubai International Financial Centre (on the right). These are a part of Dubai.

I hope this clarifies everything.

Base jumper aims too high at Burj Dubai
Gulf News -- By Alia Al Theeb
18 April 2008

Quote:
Dubai: An ambitious base jumper who wanted to jump off the world's tallest building, the Burj Dubai, ended up high and dry, in jail.

The unidentified base-jumper had made his way to Burj Dubai equipped with his parachute.

Security guards stopped him because he did not have the right permission.

The European national was not to be dissuaded so easily though, and he ran to the tower and proceeded to climb up. He said he wanted to jump off one of Dubai's landmarks.

Police were alerted and a squad was dispatched to Burj Dubai. He was caught before he could climb much higher.

Brigadier Abdul Jalil Mahdi, Deputy Director of Dubai police's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for Preventative Security, said if the man had had permission, he would have been allowed to jump, but without permission, it wa a violation of safety and security procedures.

He said the man is currently out on bail, but the case will be referred to the Public Prosecution.

Base jumping is a sport using a parachute to jump from fixed objects such as buildings and towers.

Hi all.

Here is a link to pics from 08 02 12.

116 pics of the Burj and 20 or so of the area. All new to my collection. Various angles and shots from the structure. Keep hitting next page even when it appears that the Burj pics have ended and more pages of Burj pics come up.

Here is a taste - I won't post many as these are 2 months old - in case some here figure this is the "only post pics from today" thread.
Those interested in more follow the link above.

The entrance lobbies are quite tall.

These are always interesting.

The interchange is coming along.

Thanks to fellow SSC forummer Darth Shemp for finding this for us.

Never a dull moment in this city. How is the ETA looking for the main building compared with this whole project (which I know is more of a city).

I think it's awesome that Dubai officials would give permission for a base jump. This opens the door for a future attempt.

The stated floor count does not count the antenna.

The tricky part is that when initial construction began, they built 5 or so floors which were/are to be "buried" and become basement floors (i.e. they'll build up the earth around these floors).

So while the antenna doesn't count in the overall number of floors, the question is whether the "basement" floors do.

I know this doesn't give an exact number answer to your question -- I'll leave that to the experts -- but hopefully this illuminates you as to what goes into the count for this building.

Hi all.

They initally dug a huge 15 m. deep hole so the lower levels are below the level of the ground. The floor count starts from the ground level which is 4 levels and 15.25 m. above the foundation raft (counting the unused raft level).

Here is part of my plan to help clear things up.

The floorcount is as follows and does not count the 4 lower levels:
- 160 levels
- Add 6 - for Ground level, 155 mezz., 158 mezz., 160 mezz., 160 mezz. 2, and 160 mezz. 3. (level 1 is actually the second level)
- Subtract 4 - for skipped levels 41, 74, 110, and 137.
= 162 levels - the top of which is 630.5 m.
The rest of the structure to 818.0 m. has stairs, ladders (internal), and platforms right to the top. (818.0 does not count the lower levels or the handrail and aircraft beacons on the top platform)

Arabian Business has a special report section on the Burj. Many articles, a timeline, etc. There is 8 new articles from 08 04 20 on MEP for the Burj.

Link.

MEP shots from Arabian Business.

Sorry if this one has been posted before, but holy shite.

To think that the Rose Rotana, seen in the far right of the picture, is 333 meters tall and similar in height to the likes of John Hancock Center is just completely incomprehensible and mindboggling. Looks like a tiny midrise.
