I think we talked about it before. There have been 2 fires, at least 1 was arson. They street caved in during construction due to improperly installed shoring. Then there were major electrical issues, that the contractor fixed at their own expense. That's what I know off the top of my head and we probably don't hear the normal issues that happen.

Been a tough slog. Apparently it's still on budget as insurance as insurance has covered the overages.

Didn't one of the electrical contractors go bankrupt during the construction phase and have to be replaced?

I dont think it will look quit like that, seems as though it's been toned down from that initial rendering, in particular the incorporation of the book store.

It's so nice to see that the City has seriously upped its game when it comes to library architecture. It would be nice to see a slightly more urbanized design (i.e. put it in a proper storefront strip instead of off on its own like a mini-Costco location), but this is still a vast improvement.

Library design declined through the 80s and 90s with the nadir being this turd of a building on Keewatin, complete with drive thru window... fortunately things have gotten a lot better since then.

It clearly sucks but at least the City is just a renter there... the design was not their responsibility.

Speaking of, I wonder if there are any plans to get the branch out of that strip?

Potential/planning to move the Munroe library to the new Valley Gardens CC if that goes ahead. Get it out of the strip mall.

Not to sound too crass but are libraries still a thing, I only frequent mine before holidays to pick up a few books, overall use must be way down in the digital age?!?

This is a legitimate view but libraries have evolved somewhat to become more than just a place to take out a book. In addition to digital services libraries provide that can be accessed from home/your phone, libraries also act as a community space for the city and other organizations to offer various community programs along with it being a general meeting and study space.

But you are right, traditional library usage in the sense of taking out books is likely on the decline compared to say, 20 years ago.

Moving forward, in the absence of a dramatic change to the City's overall financial situation, golf and libraries will probably be one of the first services they get out of within the next decade or two.

Libraries support people who do not have the means to buy computers, books, etc on their own. They also support people with disabilities and are a community gathering place. I'm sure some locations could be consolidated for efficiency purposes. But you also don't want them so sparse so said people do not have access. Valid argument though.

it also teaches kids, people, whomever that not everything I about computers.

Basically since Unicity, Winnipeg has been moving toward a reduction in the number of libraries such that there are fewer but bigger and better equipped libraries. I would not expect them to ever disappear altogether but I can see the day coming where it's maybe just ten or so locations as opposed to the current 20.

Golf is a bit of a different story, unlike with libraries, there are courses coming out the wazoo around Winnipeg... there is no particular need for the City to be involved in offering this option. Plus there is value in the land given that it could be developed.

I occasionally go the sir William Stephenson library to get books with my daughters. Usually weekends but it's always busy with people. Mostly seem to be using the computers or studying at the desks. But as others have mentioned, there are apps you can use on your ipad that allow you to digitally borrow books from the library without having to set foot in one.
