I know about the new rules etc... that led to these changes, its unfortunate nontheless, it looked like it actually had some effort in the design previously with those tiered blocks, bridges and waterfalls etc... this looks like a low effort splash park they'd build in Leduc.

100% agree! Very underwhelming and disapointing!

106 Street Survey out for 97-100ave.

https://cityofedmonton.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6EhMwjjmybZQUdM

My thoughts thus far:

1. We DO NOT need more on street parking in the area as it is typically <50% full and useless space. There are multiple off-street parking options and until those are developed, push parking to those.

2. Let me preface this with the fact that I live in this area and would love traffic calming, but also respect the fact that we need multiple options to get in and out of Downtown in a reasonable manner. Capacity issues already occur on 105st and 106st during rushhour and if 109s has an issue, 106st is the only real next option. To go from 2->1 lane makes me excited as a resident, but not when I look at the grander scheme of things. We need capacity from Jasper south to 97ave, period.

3. Why do we need people parking on that one block during rush-hour; it's almost as if folks purposely want to F^&$ efficient flow up for commuters. There is NO reason to permit parking in that area during peak times, period.

Unanswered questions:

1. Do I like off-peak down to 1 lane, sure, but then how do you work event nights? This route is very busy post concerts and Oilers games.

2. North of Jasper I love it going to 1 lane because of the park and true urban neighbourhood, but ours is somewhat transitional and has to accept that from 8-9am and 4-530pm it will have some peak traffic component to it.

3. IF you want to make 106st 1 lane only, where is the modelling to pick up that extra load factor and where does that go? 103st? I thought that intersection and ability to go down 103st was being removed. 109? It's pretty busy as is.

Local insight:

1. After 6pm, it is pretty quite in general and not a big issue.

2. We DO NOT need more on street parking in the area as it is typically <50% full and useless space. There are multiple off-street parking options and until those are developed, push parking to those.

3. I'd rather just have flat sidewalks, an updated Heritage Trail and some 40km/h signs.

Is speeding down the 106 Street hill currently an issue?

It can be, but generally the lights don't permit that and there are lots of people walking/biking so it slows things.

Would love to see a complete refresh and redesign of 109 street from 61st avenue to the high level bridge. Not sure if it needs any road/flow alterations, but definitely nice new sidewalks, street lights, and tree planting, something to transform it into a nice beautiful tree lined boulevard.

Agreed, make it more pleasant to walk along as it's definitely a classic 'stroad' right now.

Sometimes we need to hear it from outsiders how good things are in this city. Sure, it's not perfect and there's a lot of work to do, but I think we've done a few things right along the way.

Hello Ian,

Thank you for your email. We have reviewed your concerns, and please find below our response.

Towards 40 Project

The Towards 40 Program has a project area from 106 Street from 97 Avenue to 100 Avenue. Public Engagement is now complete for the Sharing Draft Design phase. The project team is reviewing the feedback received through the online survey. We will add your comments to the project team review.

Based on the review of roadway capacity, the design of one lane southbound with the intersection changes is not anticipated to reduce capacity through the 106 Street/97 Avenue intersection.

What we heard will be shared in the What We Decided and Final Designs early Fall 2025.

On-street Parking

The City aims to utilize the public road right of way in a fair and equitable manner for all users of the roadway. Parking provides short term uses for adjacent developments and area residents and allows for safety benefits such as speed reduction.

If you ave further questions about this, please don’t hesitate to contact [email protected]. We hope the information we have provided is helpful.
