I sincerely hope those sources are misinformed. It would be a waste of such a prolific site to put up a tower of only average height.

Everyone needs to chill. I'm sure the height will be fine because of the other design we saw earlier this year. That design was around 1,500 feet, and was part of the same "contest" to design 400 n lake shore drive. My guess is that they gave the actual architects the same basic framework (two towers, one around 1500 ft, the other at 800 ft) etc. Unless things have changed drastically since then, I bet the height will 1500 ft.

Might be the first group of NIMBYs to argue FOR increased height.

Someone with an NDA... Architect, engineers, consultants, and contractor have all been hired at this point.

I guess those in denial can hold out hope until next Tuesday.

I have a hard time believing they are this far along before even going public. They are going to have to amend the PD to make changes this significant and it's likely that whatever they are planning now will have to be tweeked or seriously altered after going through aldermanic rigamarole. Having hired a contractor based on bids based on plans that don't necessarily reflect the final project is foolish.

I can see them being eager to get going if they are happy with the numbers on their OBP project, but Related isn't stupid, they are not going to contract everything out until they have final drawings or close to it.

That said, I don't really care how tall it is as long as it's good design. Unfortunately this is Related we are dealing with it so it will probably be a permanent blight on the skyline because it's a horrendous design and/or they will hack it to death with VE. Because Related is involved I'm imagining some sort of 750' tall bastard love child of 500 N LSD and presidential towers. Bland, non descript, cheaply built, and extremely prominent in the skyline.

The slight chip on my Chicago shoulder wants our tallest buildings to be Chicagoan-designed, so if this isn't the tallest I'm OK with that. Having Sears, Vista, 401 N. Wabash, and potentially Tribune parcel tower reign is good in my book.

Though, Calatrava isn't a Chicagoan and the Spire design was just the most fantastic thing ever, that I would have gladly accepted...

Contractor has been hired for preconstruction only at this point.

Maybe it’s time to give low balling tactics a chance in NIMBY land. Coming in with a massive tower energizes the NIMBYs to riot. Maybe coming in with a more modest initial design that is well designed will get people thinking positively about it, get them accepting it. Then if there is lots of demand, they can stretch it.
Obviously they’d have to design to account for it. But enough towers have been DOA that it’s worth a shot.
