Details On True North Square To Be Unveiled

True North Square takes another step forward today.

The $400-million mixed-use downtown development is expected to be front and centre as the province makes a number of announcements at the Convention Centre.

A year ago, True North revealed the development which included three high-rise towers on Carlton Street, housing business, retail, residential and hotel rooms, but the project has been mostly shrouded in mystery.

The province will also make announcements regarding the Convention Centre, the Sports-Hospitality-Entertainment District and downtown parking today.

I'm glad that the Bowman-Chipman spat didn't derail this project. Although for what it's worth I think Bowman was right to make sure there weren't any special favours being doled out, even if in hindsight he would have been better off putting it a little more delicately.

I have a conspiracy theory that they publicly faked that whole thing so they wouldn't look to buddy-buddy before the city backed true north square

Bah? Phase 1 in mid 2018? What the heck is going on out there right now then?! Maybe a typo in his tweet?

^ Perhaps they mean opening in 2018, which would seem reasonable given the scale of the project and what's happening there now.

That would seem reasonable. I'll await further info instead of hanging on every tweet!

From a global news article:

Phase 1 of the project is set to be complete in 2018. On Feb. 23, 2016 new architectural designs of the project will also be unveiled.

^^ Interesting the TNS is being pushed as a place for food trucks. Seems to line up with the general move to get them off Broadway.

^ Why get them off Broadway? People patronizing food trucks on Broadway in the summertime is one of the few examples of vibrant street life anywhere in the entire city...

Just had a peek out the window. Looks like they're working on the Hargrave side again. You can see they have the sidewalk removed from the corner of the old church northwards. Tralier sitting on the old sidewalk bumpout. Piling rig was sitting nearby along the property line with an auger on the end. Not sure what they're drilling.

And any move to get them off Broadway won't accomplish a thing given the economics that put them there: thousands of dumpy office workers with few dumpy food options.

Christmas Village is interesting idea - I was in Netherlands a few weeks before Christmas this year and those "pop up" villages were in all the towns, really neat and fun. (if weather cooperates)

Just a question for everyone, how many properties are inside the SHED, and how many are owned/controlled by TNSE and/or their affiliates? It seems like True North is getting a stranglehold on the properties in and around there.

^ Just MTS Centre, Centrepoint and True North Square, no? Pretty sure MPI still owns the lots south of CityPlace.

The SHED has almost run out of bare land to develop... the only swaths of space left are on the northern edges near Ellice. There is a bit along Smith if someone cares to buy and demolish some lowrise office buildings south of Portage.

The most logical direction for the SHED to go is south, to swallow up the massive surface parking lots along Donald St. It's nice to see that the SHED is actually starting to take off... it would be nice to see even more surface parking lots get eliminated and replaced with development.

This doesn't give you the number of properties owned or controlled by TNSE but a general idea of the area for reference.

^ Oh yes, I guess I forgot the Powerhouse and MTS Centre (formerly Eaton's) parkade.

But if Longboat is going to develop anywhere, I'd guess it would be on the MPI owned lot immediately south of Cityplace.

Also, that map makes me wonder... are there any plans to link up the WCC extension to 363 Broadway via skywalk?
