Nice that the Mackenzie Highway is now a priority. Be nice to see one pushed up through Churchill as well. As for the FOLs, Iqaluit and Yellowknife will be part of the overall expansion that was previously mentioned. Iqaluit requiring the most infrastructure increase. Including new water and sanitary plants. A new power generation facility of a new hydro dam.

Yukon is left out but the Inuvik FOL can easily cover that. Cambridge Bay may also get a new port facility.

800 kms of the MacKenzie Highway moves forward. Long been planned not moving ahead. A lot of bridges are needed. And maybe replace the ferry crossing with bridges.

May not be a major impact for YEG but with the MacKenzie Highway completion now on the books that will reduce travel time to Inuvik by almost a day. But may also increase equipment travel through the summers now. Currently ma good portion travel to the Dempster moves through YEG at some point but this would refocus more. Highways 2 and 88 would need significant upgrades as well. The real benefit would be raw materials coming out of the north. I could see refining facilities opening up.

This however will be 10 years to complete.

It would be interesting to see more updates on housing projects in places like Whitehorse, Iqaluit, Yellowknife, and Labrador City, since those could have a major impact on local affordability and long-term population growth.

Yellowknife and Whitehorse will be easy to find. Iqaluit is a bit tougher. But we shall see, there are a couple of big projects completing this summer.

Plans are in for a major apartment in Yellowknife. Near the old Bay Store.

All 3 cities are going to need to add a lot more housing if the military upgrades are to move forward.

Inuvik is getting a new water distribution system and I think YK is as well.

Iqaluit requires a lot more. Water, Sewage and a new power system.

The Iqaluit Nukkiksautiit Hydro Project is a proposed 15-30 megawatt hydropower plant along the Kuugaluk River, about 60 km northeast of Iqaluit.

There is this, approved on Weds night. proposed 116-unit public housing development for the base of Iqaluit’s Hospital Hill received city council approval Tuesday night.

Councillors unanimously approved a development permit for the two 58-unit, five-storey structures.

Iqaluit is pushing to have hosing for an additional 3000 by 2030. Add to that the proposed expansion of military in the region that could bump it up to over 5000.

Rankin Inlet to get 750 new homes. Most will be modular and shipped in.

Exciting to hear about such rapid population growth in Nunavut (and Yukon, which has exploded in growth, albeit from a small base). Meanwhile NWT has witnessed comparatively stagnant population growth for a decade or more.

Interesting stuff! I keep tabs on Iqaluit as I lived there for a bit in the mid-2000s. While a lot has been built since then (including an entire new subdivision) it seems to have been more static in recent years with the exception of infill. Overcrowding in older housing was very common when I lived there while new apartment units were very expensive. I have no doubt this crush still exists so new affordable/transitionary housing will be very welcome

I used to get up there through the mid 2000s as well so I tend to watch the North a lot.

And with the coming military expansion there is a lot of work todo in Iqaluit. I am hoping I can get one more trip north before I am fully retired.

End of an era. Diavik Diamond mine decommissioning is well under way. The pits are now starting to be filled.

I worked on the Process building, Recreation hall and the offices. then went back up to do some work about the time they started the underground mine.

Ekati was the other one I went to. I believe that is on a pause right now.

My wife has a Diavik diamond. But when I was last up there she had asked if they had a gift shop. Yes they did and she got a t-shirt.

My wife's engagement ring is a Diavek diamond (or is it Ekati? Can't remember exactly, but I know that it is one of the two (complete with the certificate and the bear marking).
