Yeah, this thing is just continuing the Disneyfication of Manhattan. Not surprising especially considering the apparent reluctance of office workers to come back full time.

Also, not that I’m ever going to ride it, but won’t the impact of the drop ride be somewhat dulled by being indoors?

Well, indoors doesn’t necassarly mean behind a wall. It’s an extension of the obsevation deck experience. Meaning you’ll still see the city as you drop. Similar ecperience with the lifts at One Vanderbilt. You’re not just in an elevator.

As for the Disneyfication of Times Square, it is the heart if the tourism industry, a major economic driver for the city. Are they going to build this in Forwst Hills, Queens? Not likely.

Not to toot my own horn but that last article is the closest thing I've read to confirming what I have speculated about and spoken of several times in this thread and that is this schematic is giving the wrong impression of what the profile of this tower is going to look like. Specifically referring to the fact the drop rides will be "indoors" strongly suggests what I've repeated multiple times - that the bizarre torso - neck - head arrangement will actually be connected vertically with a suspended glass wall creating a floorless open "atrium" space thus serving two functions of enclosing the space which makes it practical and usable year round regardless of weather and aesthetically making the whole building look less ridiculous and more like a conventional tower form without this bizarre turkey neck exposed core with birdhouse on top in the skyline.

If I'm wrong I will eat my hat.

That'd be incorrect. The way Xing depicted it shows the 3 drop ride enclosures already, and schematics have already shown that the enclosures are only tight around each of the 3 drop rides, not a single large enclosure encapsulating the entire upper portion and stem.

Something similar to this

I don't do the regular drop rides, so I won't be doing that. But I'm sure it will be a thrill! And it will have to run year round, so they have the right idea.

with three drops you would think at least one would be outside, but anyway that part i get as it can go all year round regardless of the weather. so even if not of the highest optimal style for an amusement park like drop ride it will still be very popular. its fine for ts.

How popular do you think this observation deck will be compared to the ones already in Manhattan.

Very. They all offer their own thing. One Vanderbilt became very popular, right from the opening. I wasn’t expecting it to take off so fast, but in the age of selfies and social media, it did. People I know who normally wouldn’t do observation decks in the city were suddenly up there.

Meanwhile, the city is looking to make sure it’s not limiting itself too much, and knocking off some of the old restrictions.

Among these 18 changes are policies to:

- Update 1960s-era rules that limit where amusements are allowed, so experiential retail and family-friendly activities can be located closer to where New Yorkers live;

- Take advantage of the great economic opportunity casinos offer New York City by working with the City Council in New York state’s siting process;

How fast did Top of the Rock become popular after it reopened in 2005. Also, how long did it take for One World Observatory and 30 Hudson Yards to become popular in 2015 and 2020 respectively.

Top of the Rock wasn't a "new" deck when it reopened. It had earlier decades as a top tourists spot. So when it reopened, it was a known entity. Likewise, the WTC observatory, though not the original, was also a known entity. The Edge at 30 Hudson opened just in time for the pandemic to take hold. But that didn't stop the crowds. I thought it was was that from the Top of the Rock and Empire State decks, both of which had a lot less traffic from pre-pandemic times, you could still notice the crowds at 30 Rock. That's because tourism was dead at the time. But then I realized those were locals who had likely already been to the standards (ESB, WTC, etc), and the new kid in town was strange, something to be investigated. One Vanderbilt was a splashy, shiny, new attraction.

This new deck on 8th Avenue will be another Times Square attraction, sucking up the tourists like a vacuum.

Is tourism at the decks of the Empire State Building, 30 Rockefeller Plaza, and One World Trade Center back at pre pandemic levels now.

Just saw some of the discussion from CB5 on the drop-ride, and they're still bitter about 270 Park, among other things. But when some woman came on saying that people come to New York for "highbrow" entertainment, and not things like amusements and casinos, I had to check out. Like seriously lady, have you never been in Times Square? Nutjobs.

Lol. People go see actors in cat suits sing about being jellicle on Broadway and that's "highbrow" entertainment but going to an amusement park is somehow looked down upon? People have such weird standards. How about just letting people enjoy the entertainment they want.

Exactly. And as far as people not coming to New Yirk for casinos, get one built, and see what happens. A casino in Times Square would be packed.

Seriously wish that 270 Park Avenue had an observation deck as well at the top since the other decks in New York City are already packed with tourists.

Is that so? I don't recall you ever posting such a sentiment on this forum before.
