‘They’re real people’: Mob focus of JFK assassination flick filmed in Winnipeg
By: Brittany Hobson, The Canadian Press
Posted: Sunday, Aug. 3, 2025

WINNIPEG – Nicholas Celozzi has spent much of his life revisiting the events leading up to the assassination of former U.S. president John F. Kennedy.

Hushed stories filled his childhood home. Conversations with his uncle Joseph (Pepe) Giancana, brother to Chicago Mob boss Sam Giancana, later helped shed light on his family’s possible involvement in one of the most debated moments in American history.

After decades of film and television portrayals of Sam Giancana, Celozzi is reconceptualizing the 1963 shooting of Kennedy with a focus on the major players in the Chicago Outfit, a powerful Italian-American criminal organization.

For Celozzi, his latest screenwriting endeavour is about more than telling another assassination story.

It’s about family.

“My family, my cousins, really got tired of people using our name, monetizing our name and telling a fake story,” Celozzi said in an interview.

“These aren’t fictional people … they’re real people. They’re vulnerable, they have nerves, they make mistakes, they are not quite sure about things.”

Sam Giancana, head of the Chicago Outfit in the 1950s and 1960s, was widely known for his ties to the Kennedy family. He was gunned down in his home in 1975, and his killing remains unsolved.

Many have speculated the Mob group also played a role in Kennedy’s assassination, and this is explored in Celozzi’s “November 1963,” which began filming in Winnipeg this summer.

Relying on Pepe Giancana’s stories, Celozzi focuses on the 48 hours leading up to the assassination.

Giancana, a fill-in driver for his brother, had been a fly on the wall in the days leading up to the assassination, said Celozzi, who is also one of the producers on the independent film.

Many conversations led to what Celozzi calls the “Pepe chronicles,” a series of stories detailing the family’s Mob ties.

“I was always aware of who they were. These aren’t things that everybody just kind of goes home and talks about. It’s an awareness. It’s kind of a strange reality that you’re born into,” said Celozzi.

Pepe Giancana died in the mid-’90s, leaving his stories with Celozzi.

The writer said he knew he wanted to do something to honour his family’s history without degrading them to caricatures often found in Mob flicks. So he began working with Sam Giancana’s daughter Bonnie Giancana to craft the script.

Over the course of several years and rewrites, Celozzi said they worked to ensure every detail was accurate.

“I needed to keep that honest with the story Pepe gave me, or why do it at all? If I wasn’t going to be truthful to what he gave me, there was no purpose in me doing it,” said Celozzi.

He brought veteran Canadian producer Kevin DeWalt of Minds Eye Entertainment on board to produce the movie, which wrapped shooting in Winnipeg last week and goes into post-production in Saskatchewan.

“I don’t think the family’s proud of what happened … it was important for them to tell the truth before they die,” DeWalt said.

The cast includes John Travolta, Dermot Mulroney and Mandy Patinkin and is directed by Academy Award nominated English filmmaker Roland Joffé.

When it came time to pick a location that could mimic 1960s Chicago and the landmark Dealey Plaza in Dallas, where Kennedy was killed, producers chose Winnipeg over other major cities such as Atlanta and New Orleans in part because of its Exchange District neighbourhood. Producers decided Winnipeg was a perfect stand-in for the Windy City.

Dealey Plaza, and the famous Grassy Knoll, was built from scratch at Birds Hill Provincial Park, northeast of Winnipeg.

The film features 1,500 extras and 75 to 80 period cars to accurately portray the time period.

DeWalt said he expects viewers will be blown away by the film’s ability to bring a new level of authenticity and validity to the moment in history.

“People will walk out of the theatre with their own impressions about what it all means,” he said.

“At the end of the day, at least we’ve given them the tools for one of these things that’s been told, and they can make their own impressions in terms of how they feel about it.”

When asked if he thinks the film might ruffle feathers with historians, governments or Mob members, Celozzi said that’s not his goal.

“What I’m doing is just putting in that missing piece, not glamorizing, just writing it.”

Bob Odenkirk discusses Winnipeg on podcast

Published: August 14, 2025 at 10:57AM EDT

Speaking on a recent podcast, the ‘Nobody 2’ star shared what he liked about the city he recently filmed two movies in.
Hollywood actor Bob Odenkirk is giving Winnipeg a rave review.

In a recent episode of Seth Meyers’ podcast called “Family Trips with the Meyers Brothers,” Odenkirk spoke at length about the city, describing it as “an amazing, interesting place.”

He said Winnipeg is quiet and calm but added it could use a few more restaurants.

“It’s a bit of a curious place, because it’s pretty big—850,000 people live there,” he said, adding that his favourite area is Wolseley.

“It has some really beautiful neighbourhoods… It has a river running through it. It’s sort of a lazy river.”

Odenkirk went on to say it’s an easy place to film, as it can serve as a backdrop for many different locations.

“You can duplicate a modern city; you have these great suburbs, you have these suburbs that look like England, and you have this Exchange District,” he said.

Odenkirk added that he met a lot of great people in Winnipeg, including several musicians.

“I got some good friends there who I still talk to,” he said. “I liked it. I liked it in the same way I liked Albuquerque, which is that it takes a little while to get to know it. You have your favourite places, and the people are awesome.”

Odenkirk was in Winnipeg last year filming two movies, including “Nobody 2,” which opens in theatres this week.

I'm going to assume he is referring to certain chain restaurants that we don't have that other places have.

We obviously have a wide variety of restaurants to choose from.

Odenkirk came across as very genuine to me in this interview. I thought the Meyers were kind of fishing for a punchline about Winnipeg, but otherwise it was a really good watch.

I liked the comment that it takes very little time to go from one end of town to the other. It's all perspective.

I listened to the podcast, and I also thought he was very genuine in his praise for Winnipeg. This is actually a great advertisement for the local film industry. He really emphasized how easy it is to shoot a movie here, and the great locations. I liked his discussion of the curving streets in the Exchange that are naturally suited for filming. It was really interesting, and it sounds like he liked making two movies here this year. Great publicity for Winnipeg!

I watched the interview and also thought that Odenkirk seemed to genuinely like our city. It's funny that he compared us to Albuquerque, I guess the two cities are a similar size. He had a lot of praise for the Exchange District and the people of Winnipeg. I agree that his comments are good publicity.

The comparison would have less to do with population and more about the film community and where he’s spent a large portion of his career filming, of course both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul were shot in Albuquerque, and he’s now shot 3 films in Winnipeg.

Daniela Melchior And Kristen Bell Join ‘Violent Night 2’ From Universal And 87North
By Justin Kroll
August 28, 2025

(L-R) Daniela Melchior and Kristen Bell

EXCLUSIVE: Kristen Bell and Daniela Melchior are set to join David Harbour in the cast of Violent Night 2 for Universal Pictures and 87North. Tommy Wirkola will direct from a screenplay by Pat Casey and Josh Miller.

Universal Pictures will release Violent Night 2 on Wednesday, December 4, 2026.

While exact plot details are under wraps, Harbour’s ass-kicking Santa Clause is back. And he’s not happy.

The 2022 bare-knuckle holiday sensation Violent Night followed an embittered Santa, armed with lethal combat skills, who takes out a team of ruthless mercenaries to rescue a girl and her family. Now, it’s time for not-so-jolly Saint Nick to suit up again.

Violent Night 2 will be produced by 87North founders Kelly McCormick and David Leitch through their first-look deal with Universal. Universal’s EVP Production Development Matt Reilly and Director of Development Tony Ducret will oversee the project.

Bell most recently starred in the Netflix comedy series Nobody Wants This alongside Adam Brody, in which she also serves as an executive producer; a Season 2 is in the works. Recent acting credits include leading roles in the Amazon Prime comedy film The People We Hate at the Wedding, alongside Allison Janney and Ben Platt, and Netflix’s parody comedy The Woman in the House.

She also starred in the NBC series The Good Place, opposite Ted Danson, the animated Amazon children’s series Do, Re, & Mi, and STX Films’ couponing adventure Queenpins. In 2019, Bell reprised her role as Anna in Frozen 2, which has earned over $1.45 billion at the global box office, surpassing the $1.2 billion Frozen earned. She also served as an executive producer in the revival of the Los Angeles production of Reefer Madness The Musical.

Winnipeg-shot movie ‘Normal’ gets raucous reception in Toronto
By: Randall King
Posted: Thursday, Sep. 11, 2025

Die Hard meets Fargo.

That was one of the more on-the-nose critical reactions to the Winnipeg-lensed movie Normal, which got its world première Sunday at midnight at the 50th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival.

The film starring Bob Odenkirk, scripted by Derek Kolstad (John Wick) and directed by British filmmaker Ben Wheatley (Free Fire), got a raucous reception in the sumptuous Royal Alexandra Theatre, posh King Street digs for a film with a rather bloody, grindhouse sensibility.

(Bear in mind, any movie in TIFF’s Midnight Madness program tends to draw a crowd that’s effusive in its appreciation of genre films, cheering at every gruesome death.)

But it did not hurt that Sunday night’s sold-out crowd of 1,200 was filled with Winnipeg actors who appeared in the film, including Rainbow Stage artistic director Carson Nattrass (who walked the red carpet with his wife Sharon Bajer, herself a veteran of the locally shot Odenkirk movie Nobody), Aaron Merke, clad in an elegantly red-splattered jacket, his partner Lauren Cochran, David Lawrence Brown and Dan De Jaeger.

While no one is saying any of those actors will meet a gory death in the film, suffice it to say Normal is the kind of movie that makes the phrase “juicy role” quite literal.

Filmed last year not long after Odenkirk wrapped Nobody 2 (in theatres now), Normal casts the Better Call Saul star as Ulysses, a “substitute” sheriff in the town of Normal, Minn., where the former lawman met a mysterious demise.

When a bank robbery goes terribly wrong, Ulysses discovers the whole community seems to be hiding a dark secret.

Winnipeg actor Carson Nattrass walks the TIFF red carpet with his wife, Sharon Bajer.

“The acting pool is really amazing in Manitoba. I’ve really enjoyed my experience in Winnipeg,” Wheatley said on the red carpet preceding the première.

In the cast, Merke and Cochrane, both seasoned improv artists, were delighted to find Wheatley was happy to tap into those talents.

“Every day, there were (script) changes and every day, it was: ‘Try this! Do this! For an improviser, he was such a dream to work with,” Merke said.

Odenkirk said he too appreciated the cast, the crew and even the winter weather.

“I’m from Chicago. It’s not quite Winnipeg or Calgary where I shot (the TV series) Fargo, but it is pretty darn cold in Chicago,” Odenkirk said.

“There’s a lot of similarities to Chicago. Canadians are down-to-earth people and Chicagoans are too. They don’t suffer fancypants people and they’re hard people, they’re tough people, but they’re friendly and I like them very much.”

‘Normal' Review: Bob Odenkirk Back In Action Again In Ben Wheatley's Wild Violent Black Comedy Western – Toronto Film Festival
Story by Pete Hammond

Not to be confused with Nobody or even Nobody II which just released a few weeks ago, Bob Odenkirk already has his next uber action movie on deck. In fact Normal premiered at midnight to a rowdy crowd at the Toronto Film Festival and if their reaction is any indication it’s another hit for this unlikely action star who is fast following in the footsteps of Charles Bronson, Steven Seagal, and Bruce Willis. Filling a big void in Hollywood who dreamed it would be Saul, but this acting is breaking bad guys with the best of them.

Odenkirk plays the new substitue sheriff in the very small Minnesota town of Normal, a Fargoesqe location where the previous sheriff has passed away under mysterious circumstances, possibly involving a moose (a big symbol throughout the film) and he is only there until an election can be held, Meanwhile he patrols the street and makes sure peace is at hand. But before we get to Normal, the film opens a pre-credits sequence in Japan at a meeting of the criminal organization the Yakuza where, as is their custom, three members are asked to slice off a finger in order to show their loyalty. The first two do so, but the third has his finger caught dipping into the cookie jar so to speak. It doesn’t end well for him in what is a bloody good start to director Ben Wheatley’s latest foray into extreme violence. Nothing action wise proceeds to happen for the first 40 minutes – sans the finger pointing in Osaka – and that is typical for Wheatley (Kill List, Sightseers, Meg 2, Free Fire) who likes to take it real slow and easy and then when you least expect it: POW.

At any rate the fireworks begin and the whole place is being shot up- Yakuzas, locals, employees – you name it. Sheriff Ulysses looking at this as his first big crisis decides to walk in like Gary Cooper in High Noon and take them all on. He makes a memorable entrance into the bank crashing through the glass door, but with his own deputies Alex (Jess McLeod) and Blaine Anderson who is running for Sheriff (Ryan Allen) holding back, the only help he really gets is from Keith and Lori who shoot at anyone but him. In a case of strange bedfellows he notices that kindness under fire and they become allies as the siege continues.

Crooked Mayor Henry Winkler makes him an offer. If he agrees to kill them on the spot, nothing will happen to him. He hangs up on him and the Mayor and his brood don’t know what they are in for. Basically the carnage is all non-stop from this point on, a festival of killing in all kinds of nifty ways. The stunt guys are busy.

With a script by Nobody creator Derek Kolstad from his and Odenkirk’s story, this movie also looks to be channeling 50’s modern day classics like Bad Day At Black Rock and Violent Saturday. It is once again a fine showcase for the late blooming action star. The movie has some good actors to go with the scenery including Winkler, and Lena Headey as Moira from the town bar, a person who has more talents than you might imagine. Fletcher and Jolly win audience love here, and Allen’s naked ambitions to become sheriff is quite amusing. However Odenkirk rules this roost, just as he does in the Nobody movies, but with the firepower Wheatley keeps shooting Normal manages to exceed those action levels if you can believe it.

Shout out to Cinematographer Armando Salles whose visual palette includes lots of snow and storms, giving this film a very unique and cool vibe for a modern western.

Producers are Odenkirk, Kolstad, and another Nobody alum Marc Provissiero.

The Long Walk review – Stephen King death game dystopia is the grimmest mainstream movie for some time
Fifty young men compete in an endurance event, during which they are shot in the head at point-blank range if they slow down, in this horrific buddy story adaptation

If you like your dystopian scenarios lean and extremely mean, then look no further than this Stephen King adaptation, which is surely one of the grimmest mainstream movies we’ve had for some time. The blunt premise is custom built for death and suffering: 50 young American men are selected by lottery for an annual marathon march. If any walker slows to less than three miles per hour, or strays off the road, they are removed from the competition – by being shot in the head at point-blank range. The final survivor wins whatever they want, they’re promised.

Why these men would volunteer for a competition with such unfavourable odds we’re left to wonder, as the broader authoritarian society in which the story is set – which looks a lot like 1960s America – is barely seen or explained. It’s clear who we’re rooting for though: Cooper Hoffman’s Ray Garraty, who is dropped off at the starting line by his tearful mother (Judy Greer), then it’s off to the races. Garraty is an all-round decent soul, who befriends and encourages his fellow competitors, particularly Pete, played by British actor David Jonsson (who’s come a long way from Rye Lane). Their growing friendship is the film’s heart, and both actors are innately charming and natural, though both have deeper, darker histories and motivations to reveal.

The vibe is initially reminiscent of Stand By Me, another King story about young men bonding on the road: bantering, sharing stories, chatting about nothing and everything. There are some entertaining supporting characters: spiky, bullying Barkovitch (Charlie Plummer) and cocky but vulnerable Olson (Ben Wang) in particular. At its best, the story slots into an easy rhythm, though the camaraderie is destined not to last, as the tiring pack is routinely winnowed down by the accompanying military (led by a cartoonishly shouty commander played by Mark Hamill), and almost every horrific head shot is rendered in full, blood-spurting detail.

King wrote this story in 1967, when it doubtless resonated with the random, pointless slaughter and the male comradeship of the Vietnam war. It remains to be seen how it will land in an age of flashier death-game stories such as Squid Game and The Hunger Games (or, for that matter, the imminent remake of King’s The Running Man), although the plight of troubled young men in a fascist society is still very much a live issue, of course.

Director Francis Lawrence has form here: he directed several of the Hunger Games movies, but he seems determined to take a different tack here. Unlike the gaudy setting of those films, the only sense of the wider dystopian society we get here, apart from a few brief flashbacks, is the landscape the competitors wander through: an almost deserted, often picturesque rural America that looks like a William Eggleston photo album come to life.

It’s mentioned that the walk is being filmed and broadcast, but we don’t really hear about that again. And although some practicalities are addressed (defecation alert!), the human endurance aspect of the exercise is skirted over at times. At one point a walker has a problem with his shoes, for example, and is forced to discard them – a game-changing incident, you might think, but it is never mentioned again. And on they stagger towards the preordained conclusion, straining viewer endurance as much as their own.

The result comes across like a cross between a buddy movie and a horror movie – a war movie without the war. Ultimately, it all comes down to the core relationships, so it’s just as well that Hoffman and Jonsson are both terrific; their stars are certain to rise further off the back of this. But it is left to the viewer to fill in the gaps, suppress their niggling questions and just go along with it. Maybe, to mangle a familiar saying, the real treasure is the friends they made along the way, most of whom unfortunately get shot in the head.
