Otherwise, the rezoning would be rejected. Of course, the public service was like, we don't usually tie development permits on city owned land to the judgement of a lease tenant of a city owned property. Santos and Duncan voted it down so then Wyatt and Schreyer voted down the original motion and it died.

It was crazy because the head of the board guy came up first and said, we don't care about parking anymore, we want the land so we can develop it ourselves...then 30 people came up including other board members and yelled that they might as well close the club if the parking was lost.
So in laymans terms, what happens next? Is the project dead?

The gall of these people. Holding up a housing project (with a Federal Government grant) for people in need, since they will have to walk an extra 20 metres. They should all hold their heads in shame. Bunch of friggin NIMBYS.

No, basically nothing important happened yesterday. The project will be voted on by the Executive Policy Committee next, then all of City Council. It's the City Council vote that actually matters.

It should pass through EPC and Council but we should probably expect more theatrics from the Granite crowd along the way. Perhaps a curveball from Rollins too?

The main vote was tied 2-2. So it moves on to EPC for vote.

it will likely pass at EPC, which also means council.

Yikes, talk about winning no friends in the court of public opinion. You wanna jeopardize the future of the club? I think they just put up a masterclass in doing just that.

Hopefully Schreyer and Wyatt are the only EPC members against it, but I do worry that not having Rollins on EPC (and on the Property and Development Committee) is going to be a real setback to projects like this, because she was so consistently supportive.

I don’t understand the ‘partnership’ idea that the Granite CC wants so badly. They don’t own the land, they don’t have the development expertise, they aren’t providing the funding. So what is the Granite CC bringing to the table in this ‘partnership’? It’s not what I would call a partnership.

I think they consider themselves humble yet powerful pillars of the community being bullied by evil real estate moguls, like in Breakin' 2:Electric Boogaloo. Therefore they deserve special treatment and recompense for the grievous injury of losing their free parking and in exchange they will, I dunno, dispense ""Community Perspectives"" and folksy wisdom on request.

That or someone wants their palm greased before they go away.

This Don Woodstock chap seems like a real piece of work.

I notice also that Woodstock has taken a page from the Elon Musk playbook, and wants to create a City of Winnipeg version of D.O.G.E. I'm sure that will go over well.

Granite Curling Club: We don't want this.

City: Okay, but it's not going to directly affect you other than we need housing for people!

Granite Curling Club: But the parking! We will lose it! We want to own the lot instead!

City: From us? That's a hard no, and even if you want it, it's this price.

Granite Curling Club: I don't want anything near our club at all!

City: Would you like the homeless to be housed? That's what we're trying to do here!

Granite Curling Club: If we don't see them, they don't exist.

City:

This is my take on this whole thing.

If they're threatening to shut down because they're nothing but crybabies, then shut down then.

Goddam imbeciles.

Exactly. Let them shut down. I've never seen the curling club jam packed, and aside from that curling is a dying sport. If they are running with the narrative that losing a parking lot (that does not even belong to them), will make them go under, then good riddance.

Perhaps the City could raze the club to the ground, and build a larger affordable housing complex. I am sure curlers have plenty of other options.

The Granite Curling Club seemed to want to turn this into a symbolic David vs. Goliath battle, with themselves as the plucky underdog. IMO they've turned it into something symbolic, but it's a battle between self-centred entitlement vs the public good.

If it truly is a dying sport, then perhaps they should refocus their efforts on actually getting people to curl, rather spend time and space on things where it would actually benefit literally everybody around them, maybe even themselves.

Rather than blocking this whole development, they should encourage this to actually happen. When this does get built, there may be kids who might be curious about the sport living in this new residential complex who may want to try out curling. This is what's most likely what they're afraid off, because they for some reason can't figure out a way to reach out to the next generation of potential curlers, whether it's at a grassroots level, or a club level, or any level at all.

It seems that the club needs new leadership, and the way how they are now and their attitude towards this proposed development is not doing themselves any favours.

He is a real piece of work. Thought he'd have retired back to Jamaica by now. Former bus driver, as is his wife.
