Definitely employing locals and patronizing local business I would expect.

whatnext is a chicken little Debbie downer.

LaPointe is an embarrassing partisan hack. He's gone down that rabbit hole ever since being rejected when he ran for Mayor of Vancouver.

There's a reason politicians spend public money for bread & circuses. To distract the dullwitted from real issues.

If you think you're the forum's "real issues" poster, you'll be disappointed.

Civil jury trials to be paused during FIFA World Cup in Vancouver

The FIFA World Cup is less than a year away from coming to Vancouver, and it’ll have a significant impact on the provincial court system, including the pausing of civil jury trials.

According to Court Operations, due to the strain that the World Cup will have on police resources, certain court dates will need to be rescheduled, and certain sessions will be paused during the FIFA World Cup in Vancouver...

...Court Operations states that due to the influx of visitors in Vancouver, leading to heavy traffic congestion, hotel rooms may be difficult to come by, particularly for deliberating juries and out-of-town witnesses.

“The full extent of the impacts is uncertain and will remain so for some time,” the release states, adding, “We do know that the effects on the police and sheriff resources required to participate in or support the court’s operations will be substantial, particularly in respect of criminal trials and jury trials.”...

for context, the honda celebration of light gets about 1.4 viewers over 3 nights in a very select few neighbourhoods and vancouver has been hosting this for generations. Plus we had the olympics and taylor swift which was all successfully held here

for the world cup, Vancouver will get 7 matches of which maybe 4 would be of any significance. we don't need to reschedule anything.

And I believe the AA Convention just wrapped up in Vancouver, with 30,000 attendees yet life went on as normal despite the demand on hotel rooms.

Where did I say that? It sucks, but it works out to at most a (cumulative) month's worth of legal delays... in other words, yet another nothingburger with a catchy headline to grab gullible fearmongers, one more than worthy of a prestigious, unbiased institution such as DailyHive.

Add another zero, then 71k. The Qatar World Cup saw about 53k attendees per match. We're getting seven matches.

7 games over 37 days of which the majority of people coming to the games will be locals.

Qatar received over 1m tourists for the last World Cup, or roughly 15-16k per match. I'd expect 2010-level crowds on game days at the very least.

The spectacular city you must visit to watch the FIFA World Cup in 2026

Liam Grace
Published August 3, 2025

Vancouver, Canada’s cool and quirky ‘Rain City’ (Picture: Getty Images)

I’m not easily starstruck. But on my first night in Vancouver, I was rapt to learn that Lionel Messi had stayed in the same hotel just two months before me.

Football’s greatest player, who is expected to feature at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, was based at the Hyatt Regency for an away match with Inter Miami.

Vancouver is, of course, one of many locations in North America you can visit to watch the biggest sporting event on the planet, live and in person, in less than 12 months.

But it’s safe to say most Brits will feel more at home here than in the United States or Mexico.

The Canadians have the same sense of humour as us. They have the same King as us. They even seem to have the same appreciation for Oasis, given their songs seemed to be played whenever my accent is heard in a bar.

If you’re planning a football holiday, there is so much to do here. From whale watching to climbing mountains, seaplanes to grizzly bears, here’s why you should choose Canada’s cool and quirky ‘Rain City’.

...

The beautiful game: thriving at every level
As Brits, we’ve come to associate Canada with ice hockey and freezing temperatures.

But that certainly isn’t the case during summertime in Vancouver, where the beautiful game is thriving.

Don’t be put off by the fact they call it soccer, because there is not one but three Vancouver-based football teams to get behind at various levels.

Watching Vancouver FC was the highlight of my trip. They had a hype man called ‘Crazy P’ leading chants from fans with a drum; one is sung to the tune of Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) by Eurythmics.

It was a little like an English non-league match, but with a lot more emphasis on entertainment.

...

Very much appreciated their recommendation of Tap & Barrel as a peak dining draw for "wine and comfort food".

Can't be picky when "Liam Grace was a guest of Destination Canada and Destination Vancouver" was paying for it.

I wouldn't say Canadians have the same sense of humour as Brits. Last time in London we saw The Play That Goes Wrong which I thought was hilarious but my partner just groaned.

That's true. When is it my turn to be a guest? I wouldn't mind someone else picking up the tab.

The world cup trophy was at the Italian cultural center this morning. The place was packed at 9am. I was hoping to see the trophy and leave quickly but it did not turn out that way. Did not get the chance to see it.

People are excited.

I think this whole thing is going to be a HUGE FAIL. I worked for Expo 86 Corp for years, I was big fan of the 2010 Games but this just has a bid vibe. I welcome the trollers to tell me what I really should think now.
