In Manhattan, any of the Midtown canyons are of course fantastic (though I'd say the West 30s are generally the best of the best); but my real favourites are some of the broad, north-south residential canyons on the Upper East and West sides, especially where you get a view downhill: https://goo.gl/maps/CAXQTXtRzFwGtFhH9

One of my favourite intersections downtown: https://goo.gl/maps/gn5bP6z3xGqgDr1V7

The 42nd St crosstown perspective might be the most famous canyon in Manhattan. It's the vantage point most often referenced to witness the Manhattanhenge phenomenon: https://goo.gl/maps/KJ1Rx19E1Ce6io5A6

^ Nice links, guys. Manhattan's canyons are probably the greatest. They go on forever, plus many of them are lined with prewar buildings, which make them unique. No place on earth has that. Chicago probably has the closest thing to that, but even then it is nowhere even remotely close in scale.

funny, in chicago, because the street grid is true E-W/N-S, we have what we call "Chicagohenge" on every vernal and autumnal equinox, where the sun sets directly down the E-W skyscraper canyons of the loop.

it's kind of become a mini-event within the city every spring and fall.

It may be an unpopular opinion but I absolutely love those neon signs and advertisements. So Blade Runner-esque.

The two lower-Manhattan examples.
Chicago-Wabash looking north towards Trump Tower.
SF example.
One of the Hong Kongs

The intersection of 5th Avenue and Cherry Way in Pittsburgh gives you two canyons with dramatic ends at one spot.

https://goo.gl/maps/wnhsCxD3GDkWBgR4A

I've got to get to Pittsburgh and see that dramatic urban texture in downtown first hand.

I love the alleyways snaking through Boston.

One of my trip ideas post Covid is fly into Pittsburgh, then do an Amtrak loop of Pittsburgh-Philadelphia-New York-Boston.

Greatest skyscraper canyon is a boring conversation, because it's NYC. So many great options from Park Ave, 57th St, Avenue of the Americas, Broadway, Wall Street, etc. etc. etc.

Best skyscraper canyon in each city? That's a more exciting conversation to me.

Philadelphia

Here are the two best.

Griswold Street in Detroit is my pick for best non-Chicago Midwestern canyon.

What this thread is teaching me is that I am far more impressed by canyons along wider boulevards that seem to go on far into the distance (ie Manhattan Avenues) than shorter canyons on super narrow streets where the street is basically overwhelmed.

For example, I tend to be less impressed with this:
