The speed and scale is good for affordable housing.

Could be a little nicer looking, but I’ve seen worse.

7 months later and the building doesn't look much different, but I'm sure a lot of work has been done on the inside. The pace they were going at erecting this thing made me feel like they'd have occupants by now - as unrealistic as that may be.

Some decent progress being made on the townhomes.

Not surprised there is consideration about this as a future step. The story has a couple of photos of the townhouse component of Roxborough.

Is Oriole the next Roxborough? CityHousing Hamilton debates east-end townhouses
Coun. Sam Merulla eyes ‘whole other level’ through higher-density, mixed-income redevelopment

With the redevelopment of a former CityHousing enclave into a mixed-income community in Hamilton’s east end underway, Coun. Sam Merulla is now looking to the northeast.

The longtime Ward 4 representative hopes to set the stage for a similar revamp of a subsidized townhouse complex at Oriole Crescent.

His idea is to rezone the low-slung area just south of Britannia Avenue and west of the Red Hill Valley Parkway to allow greater building heights and density.

Housing with a spectrum of market prices and rents would blend with rebuilt CityHousing rent-geared-to-income units, emulating the model of nearby Roxborough Park, the project that’s under construction.

“It really is an incredible opportunity to maximize the footprint with intensification of a mixed-use residential development,” said Merulla, who is retiring at the end of this term.

That would involve the demolition of the 214 CityHousing townhouse units in the Oriole area and potentially finding a developer to incorporate them anew into a denser community.

I live here now and I'm not surprised to see this. I obviously wouldn't be happy about being evicted but at the same time, the area is garbage and the units are incredibly old and in terrible condition. I just hope that if it does happen, the units don't sit empty and abandoned for years after everyone is evicted like they did at Jamesville.

That’s, like, multiple city blocks in size… just how big of a building are they putting in there? 0_o

I think there are 3 or 4 buildings going in there - which are very close to each other.
More economical to do one major excavation than 3 or 4.

Photos of townhouses, affordable apartment building and the excavation for the condo buildings from Monday. I'm not sure if the apartment building is occupied yet?

I live in the neighborhood (about 4 blocks away) and there's been tons of noise today. Guess it makes sense for putting up a new crane.

does anyone know the size of the units? it's great they are building more units.

I hope the low income people living there will not be crammed, than in the townhomes.

Not wasting time.

I found this rendering - apparently these buildings will be called "Roxy Condos" - I'm not particularly sure where on the site these will be located, but I *think* they are what is currently under construction..
