One thing I noticed when arriving to Newnan is that, compared to the rest of Metro Atlanta, there are *NO* SunTrust bank branches nearby (which IMO is absurd, given the size, rate of growth and average income of the area) despite the bank being based *IN* Atlanta. In a way, it really does make you feels like a stepchild (compared to the rest of the Atlanta area) to be the only place to not have a "local" bank in your town.
Apparently, in discussion with someone with fairly good knowledge of the situation, the reason SunTrust has seemingly blacklisted Coweta County is because of some requirement that every bank must commit to opening a minimum of 3 branches in order for the County to approve their building permit(s). And that seems legit, because I notice the other banks in Coweta County (Wells Fargo, Fidelity, Synovus, etc.) all have at least 3 branches.
SunTrust actually owns the entire tract of land where the ATM sits on Highway 34 and has been targeting that plot for a branch since before the recession. But unless SunTrust has a change of heart, Coweta County drops their requirement or until Coweta County reaches a critical mass that can support 3 branches, SunTrust customers will have to continue using the branch(es) in Peachtree City.
