I think this would be an AMAZING building for an architecture school, not to mention the vibrancy it will add to the warehouse district and downtown.

May be from a beautiful era, but it's still UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGLY~

Ugh I wish my studio was that amazing! I think it's a beautiful structure and would be perfect for an architecure college. The building out back could be transformed into a massive shop for all sorts of things then every year could have it's own floor for a studio space and classrooms, it woiuld be magnificent!! Maybe some retail like a local coffee shop and cafe could open up on the bottom *drule*

^ I agree, I see so much potential in that building, especially after seeing those interior shots.

kgc087....our school is exactly what you just described, its a renovated old silk mill. on the main floor there is a cafe, art gallery, wood working shop, a gym a class your and theatre hall. the second floor is computer lab, offices and library, and the third floor is studio space, loft area for gathering and crits and more office space...for a renovation on a old structure they did a pretty good job. I could see them doing something similar in Saskatoon with the John Deere Building.

Thanks for the pictures WoodlandCritter. There's great potential for some really funky and vibrant classroom and studio spaces in there. I'm excited.

Where are you at woodland? My building was built in the '60's I think and was designed by a very prominent Canadian architect. The exterior is uggglly but has beautiful geometries while the interior is pretty cool. The John Deere building reminds me of the old warehouses in The Distillery District in Toronto, just exceptional.

While I agree that the John Deere building may be pretty plain from the outside, but it's exactly what many any architectural firm would desire for office space. Kindrachuk, Stantec and (to a lesser degree) AODBT have all undertaken adaptive re-uses of older industrial-type buildings for their offices. The interior of the Buckwold Building, which houses the Stantec offices, was very much like the John Deere before Stantec moved in. In fact, it still retains a lots of its character with visible form lines on the underside of slabs and some wildly out-of-plumb concrete columns.

I'm at UofWaterloo Arch...but our school is in Cambridge ON, right along the grand river. I'm sure they could have done more with the building if they had the money, cause now we need more space and have to add onto it apparently.
I like it tho.

Kensington

I don't have any pictures, but the City has started work on preparing the Kensington area out at the end of 22nd St. having started clearing all of the trees/bush from the area. Things have just been bulldozed at this point, but I'm sure they'll make some progress cleaning it up to begin servicing the lots soon.

Nice Wood, I'm at Ryerson! Perhaps we should connect sometime and discuss the tragedies of Saskatoon over a couple pints.

I still can't believe the city named a suburban neighbourhood Kensington, the new warehouse district would be much more suited to that name.

Downtown Galt is beautiful however, Hespeller Road completely ruins Cambridge for me. That has to be one of the worst stretches of suburban style commercial in the country.

Yeah downtown is beautiful, have some great pictures from all over the area.
and yeah my classmates and I have discussed our hate for hespeler road, it is quite a depressing main stretch leading into such a historically beautiful place.

And if anyone not familiar is wondering, Hespeler is basically an 8th Street on steroids...not pretty haha.

kgc087 we'll have to work something out sometime if we can.

North crane at the health science addition at the U of S is being brought down. Also, glass is being installed on the east wall of the building.

So long Kelsey's... Hello Brazil

Driving by Kelsey's today on 8th and noticed it is GONZO!! In talking with one of the retailers... they spent the better part of last week cleaning the place out and basically gutting it. The owner, who also owns Montana's apparently indicated that the rent was getting ridiculous and pulled the plug on the whole restaurant. The new owner is apparently bringing a Brazilian Grill concept to our city. After searching for such on the internet noticed both Calgary and Edmonton have something similar, but there is no mention of either place expanding to Saskatoon. Work is underway by the new owner to get it up and running ASAP!!

The old Whyte's pharmacy on the corner of 23rd & 2nd appears to have been leased. Anyone know to whom?

Any word on the corner of College and Clarence? They aren't really going to move that place are they? There's a semi sitting there with something on it.

That would be hillarious. I wonder how many of the pieces would fall off when they lifted it.

Nice!!! ... Do you mean Bolero in Calgary? I'll agree with the inumerable, extremely favourable revues for that place! Of the number of times we've dined there, they've done a very good presentation each time! (And the food tastes great, too!) We will definitely make the trip to Saskatoon to try it out, once it opens up!

Old House

It's like I was lost and finally found my way home. Nice to see this up again. Going back to an old topic, the house on the top of the University bridge. Neufeld Building Movers were moving equipment onto the lot next to the house late yesterday to move one of the houses. It will be interesting to see if it is the much talked about house and what unlucky area will get it it it moves.
