Now, it would be nice if they extended the M-Line one stop to the GNW Campus so construction coincides with the campus construction - the launching point for the rest of the line would be to the west of the GNW campus.

It'd be quite a hit for many Granville Island retailers if 1800 students + teachers were to disappear from the island. I'd assume other higher education institutions would be interested in a sub-lease or possibly taking over the whole lease.

But what other uses for the site do people forsee?

Unfortunate for Granville Island, but these kinds of institutions should be close to rapid transit, and the new location is much closer to rapid transit (and will eventually be right on it).

Cool idea. Not sure how much of the Emily Carr space fronts the water - or whether there would be any dock space available for displays or programming - but with Granville Bridge's clearance, it's certainly a more viable site than the Plaza of Nations.

Emily Carr University shortlists three proponents for Great Northern Way campus

The Emily Carr University of Art + Design Campus Redevelopment Project has announced Applied Arts Team, BC Education Partners, and Tandem Education Partners as the three shortlisted proponents for the Great Northern Way campus project.

The capital cost of the project is up to $134 million and will be provided by the B.C. government (up to $113 million) with the remainder through a capital campaign by Emily Carr.

A request for proposals (RFP) will be issued to the three companies in fall 2013 and Emily Carr will award the contract in the summer 2014. Construction will begin in the early fall of 2014 and the new university campus is expected to be completed in 2016.

Interesting diagram from Emily Carr. I take it that the curving dotted line is the right-of-way for the future SkyTrain line? From the outline, it looks like the station is planned to be at-grade at the tunnel portal, with a station house on Great Northern Way.

I had been under the impression that this station was going to be "behind" Emily Carr and parallel with VCC-Clark, which would have been less accessible to the neighbourhood, so I guess this station placement is good news.

They rejigged the streets a bit some time ago because of the continued use of the railway lands. That also necessitated a change to the station location (before, it was, as you mention, E-W, but probably right where the ECUAD building is now proposed to be built). I think it is still proposed to be an underground station as the guideway is supposed to go under GNW rather than over it.

I still have to wonder if it wouldn't be cheaper in the long run to abandon VCC-Clark station and start tunneling the extension from the side of the Grandview Cut right out of Commercial-Broadway station.

I've had the same thought.

In my ideal transit plan:
1. Tunnel the Millennium Line under Broadway at Commercial and abandon the VCC Station.
2. Have the Streetcar Line built (using the money saved from abandoning another CoV pet project discussed at length in another thread).
3. Have a streetcar spur line that runs to the False Creek flats and utilizes the VCC skytrain guideway and terminates at Commercial.

That was the original plan -
but the City wanted to support the High Tech False Creek Flats area with transit - plus building a station under Broadway at Glen/Clark would have been very disruptive to Broadway with cut and cover for teh station.
In addition, they couldn't bore under Broadway in the area because China Creek lies under there (soft soils).

Is it possible to add a station along expo line in the false creek flats area? The distance from broadway to main is quite long.

I always wondered about that - I don't know.
- there seems to be a relatively flat area just west of the Home Depot.

At the moment, there is construction at the west side of the GNW campus to push Thornton street all the way to the back of the campus lands.

The cafeteria in the BCIT build (555 GNW) closed in July saying that the building was going to be closed. I haven't seen any word from BCIT about that, but I guess we'll find out in September.

Of course, there's also the new MEC headquarters are being built just up the street at Glen & GNW. Could be lots of construction along Great Northern Way for the next few years.

Thanks for the link to the 1980 Foley renders.

In a previous iteration, I think 1980 Foley would have been an expansion of the then QLT Building (which has passages to nowhere extending to the west). Those new renders relate more to the Centre for Digital Media than the former QLT Building.

Anyone know anything about this project on Lot O at the GNW Campus? i.e. are these current renderings?
