I think you got the wrong thread... it's not tall enough, and it's not U/C.

^i love the density of calgary's but honestly find Edmonton's much more balanced and given the river valley for more photogenic.

however, the quality and volume of recent projects in calgary does make me green with envy.

Some home town biases on this site are so funny. It's obvious that at some point in the last economic boom in Alberta that Calgary's skyline surpassed Edmonton's in style, height, balance, and scale. Their really is no question about it. And if Edmonton's was so photogenic, why do I have a tough time picturing it without googling it? I mean if I saw a picture of it I'd know what city I'm looking at, but if somebody asked me to make a simple sketch I wouldn't know where to begin. Calgary on the other hand I could get most of it right.

Sorry for perpetuating this argument, when I get home I'll try and ad something a bit more constructive.

I do feel bad for you poor bastards up there and that fucking height limit thing...

on the bright side, Calgary would make a top ten list of cities over a million with a laughable football stadium!

I really don't see how relevant it is how many buildings over 12 floors a city has...particularly when the point of discussion seems to be something along the lines of "Calgary's soon-to-be tallest may be 300 feet taller than ours but we have a few more buildings over 12 floors than you..." followed by "no you don't..." "yes you do..." etc.

Bottom line, Edmonton is a little late out of the starting blocks but it looks like their latest proposals are getting taller - hopefully they will start to see more big boys in the years to come. You can still build to nearly 500' there, which is not too shabby at all. Look at what Vancouver did with a similar limit pre Shangri-la.

Yeah, what happened to the height limit there... has been raised to 200m or done away with completely?

^There are now special exceptions for prominent sites. As well the developers have to jump through many hoops for increased density such as superior architecture, public amenities/art, heritage density transfers etc. The city has also hinted that it will allow taller office towers in the future to deal with the lack of space downtown.

It just seems small town compared to Calgary. And each year the gap gets greater and greater. Actually it reminds me a lot of North Yorks Skyline.

It's not that Edmonton is small time, it's just that Calgary's skyline is that of a city 5x the size, we are just so big time (not to get cocky, but it is true) we make Edmonton look small, when in fact it has a skyline of a city 2-3x it's size.

Funny, an Edmonton /Calgary Rivalry? Now there's a new one!

It's part of our heritage. No matter what, Edmonton is better than Calgary, in every aspect, simply because I'm from Edmonton. They teach this in schools here.

And visa versa, if I was from Calgary...

But it's an intimate feud. Only those who enjoy S&M would understand. And in this case, calgary is our bitch.

These arguments are a part of Canadian history. Your watching a longstanding tradition carry out here folks. Admission should be charged!

without turning this into an off-topic...the shear length of the skyline is ridiculous and almost impossible to capture in a decent shot....

My God, this thread is flooded with testosterone.

I'm really surprised how close that Montreal tower is being built to its neighbour.

SSP is as close to accurate as possible ... I made sure of it!

Cities/12+ storeys
Toronto - 1677
Vancouver - 626
Montreal - 500
Calgary - 227
Edmonton - 224

The boom in Calgary over the last several years is killing you!

Montreal would be at around 600-650. Maybe 700 but that's a stretch.
