What will happen really quickly is the re-start of the old construction thread unless we encourage everyone to work with the new setup (it'll happen because that's what everyone's used to, and already the thought is that this thread is the replacement for the construction thread). If we're going to give this concept a try, we should actually give it a try. You can't quit smoking if you reduce your use to five smokes a day, right? Furthermore, the old mega-thread style caused a lot of news items to be completely lost among other threads. Jumping between topics would sometimes kills some conversations short while others wouldn't be seen by the majority of posters.

The general threads apply for projects that do not need their own threads or news items that do not warrant new threads and do not apply into the other sections of the forum.

Many people don't have the time to sort through each and every thread, as such i feel we should have this general thread for those such people, aswell as the specified threads for more in depth conversation.
Then the posted development project threads will be basically useless.

If it's a project that does not have its own development project thread, then it's okay to post updates here. Usually, those kinds of projects are the smaller and less noticeable ones. If you have news about the Shangri-la, post it in the Shangri-la thread.

Then I will gladly, and immediately, remove and delete all of my development info threads.

The point of this new format was to allow developments to have their own threads, and that these threads would also be the update threads for these developments. We're not being Nazi's, it's simply the new system.....otherwise, we might as well go back to the old format [which we won't].

If you are posting something here that doesn't already have a thread to it, go ahead.

It's really not that difficult to understand. If your post is about a specific project then post it in that topic. Dylan and the mods are providing this space for us and if they want to try something more organized then you should try and show respect.

Another IGA downtown? Well the one on Burrard is a license-to-print-money, it's always packed. So it only makes sense to open another.

Where on Robson?

Portland will be opening a downtown Safeway in the Pearl District sometime next year. I'm not certain but I think it will be Safeway's first two-level store.

Well, if Portland's getting a downtown Safeway, and Seattle's getting a downtown IGA... perhaps downtown Vancouver will get a Fred Meyers???

Big changes afoot for Granville Island

PHOTO: DOUG SHANKS

Granville Island’s Public Market could be expanded by up to 15,000 square feet.
By Magda Ibrahim

Sep 20 2007

Public consultation will help influence decision-making

Since its redevelopment from an industrial-manufacturing site to a shopping and entertainment district in the 1970s, Granville Island has been one of Vancouver’s foremost tourist attractions. A haven for local arts communities and small businesses, ordinary citizens possess a rare, seemingly proprietary sense of protection for its unique character.

But that character could be subject to changes — both subtle and sweeping — in the coming years, as plans for its renewal begin to be formed through a series of public open-house events and stakeholder workshops.

Work/live spaces and private housing could be added under the plans, along with an increased proportion of paid parking, a shuttle bus, and more nighttime entertainment. Also on the cards are suggestions including an outdoor ice-skating rink or outdoor dance floor, a night market, and fish sales direct from boats at the Public Market.

Norm Connolly is a planner and manager of the Island Insight project, first set up in 2005 to look at Granville Island’s long-term future. “We knew we had to address long-standing issues like transportation and the old industrial buildings, and get public input into the future of the island,” he says. “It’s been a while since anything like this has happened, and now that we’re in the 21st century, it’s a good time to address these things.”

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, a federal organization that manages Granville Island, is holding the series of open-house events where locals can offer their views. About 150 people attended the first open house, called Speak Up!, on July 20. The responses — which can be viewed online — are extremely varied.

“It’s a challenge to keep everyone happy,” admits Connolly. “If you ask three people about what we should do, we might get three different points of view. In the parking issue, we’ve had really mixed responses — opinion is very divided.

“We hope there’s a nice Granville Island compromise; the number-one priority for people is not to change too much, and to keep the unique character and experience with its art focus.”

Some of the older buildings, which currently provide covered parking, could be turned into more space for artists to create and sell their works, and an estimated 15,000 square feet are proposed to be added to the Public Market, currently at 50,000 square feet.

Jan Carley, executive director at the Granville Island Cultural Society, which runs the Waterfront Theatre and Performance Works, says she’s keen to see more space devoted to the arts. “An amazing place like this definitely needs long-term planning as the city gets bigger and Granville Island becomes more popular,” she says. “From a cultural perspective, Granville Island is just booming. We’re hoping more performance space gets into the mix of planning.”

Connolly adds that some of the more modest ideas, such as widening the Aquabus ferry ramp and making it less steep, are likely to happen soonest, while longer-term projects, such as the redevelopment of old buildings, will take longer.

A second open house will be held on September 29, and a third on October 24. The results will be compiled for a final report, to be released in November. (Info: Speak-Up.ca.)

“Some issues are controversial, like the residential housing, but it’s nice to have issues there’s still some debate on,” says Connolly. “The challenge is to find funding — we’ll have to see what we can get.”

I'd like to see another Granville Island type market along the waterfront in Gastown (like the market in Seattle) instead of the Whitecaps Stadium. Add in a few bars and restaurants as well. Controversial on here - I know....

That actually sounds like a good idea, although I wouldn't want to ditch the stadium over it. Wonder if there would be a way to integrate the two... Whitecaps get to build the stadium in exchange for building a 30-45 000 square foot location for a public market and square along the gas town waterfront.

^^^All good ideas.

I think the #1 thing wrong with Granville island is simple. C-A-R-S. Get rid of all the cars in the place! There are few formal pavements so people and cars are using the same right of way, and it's just a mess when there are people driving by like it's a racetrack, reversing without looking, and idling their engines. And think, this is supposed to be a kid-friendly place, so the chances of accidents is very high. Get rid of the cars, run shuttle buses and more bus-routes to the mouth of the island, and get that freaking tramline up and running NOW! The WHOLE ATMOSPHERE of the place will improve if people can wander around more freely. There would be much more hanging-out on cafe and shop patios, and way more perusing of stalls and impromptu gatherings to watch street performers if there was less car traffic (rather than people rushing to the relative safety of "indoors").

The #2 thing to fix is to convert all those building shells that are currently *wasted* as "car parking"(!) into more spaces for businesses! I mean, in this society, are nice dry spaces to put your darling car more important than nice places to put visit once you get *out* of your darling car!? There are whole buildings on Granville Island - which has a very fixed and limited amount of real estate already - that are alloted to putting your cars!!! WTF, how does that make sense - less space for the businesses you go to visit, but whole buildings just for cars?! Backwards!

Fix those, THEN it would be a great place.

I agree. However as it is now, it is very difficult to get to the place unless you walk or drive. The tram line would certainly help this situation out.
