The JFK redevelopment is a bit different. There will be a huge new Terminal 1 (one of the largest terminals anywhere), Terminal 4 will be expanded, primarily for Delta, Terminal 5 will be expanded for JetBlue and British Airways, mostly, and Terminal 8 (currently the largest) will be expanded for AA, mostly.

So JFK will have gone from nine smaller terminals to four huge terminals, basically. And all the terminals will be new or newish (the oldest, Terminal 8, is maybe 10-15 years old).

Three existing, operational terminals will be demolished- Terminal 1, Terminal 2, and Terminal 7. Terminals 3 and 9 were demolished relatively recently (T3 was the old PanAM terminal and was largest in the world when built).

The other major JFK improvement concerns mobility. The Airtrain is doubling capacity/frequency, and the roadway network is being completely rebuilt.

If they did the runways right, they could free up a lot of land for terminal development.

In addition they could also fix some problems caused by the current runway orientation. As it is, the 13-31s cause issues with plane having to deal with Manhattan skyscrapers (mentioned in the Regional Plan Association report.) Rotating that traffic out over the harbor, instead of over Manhattan would help with that. It would also increase the distance of those approaches from the threshold of LGA runway 4. I've heard that's an issue also.

Finally, someone mentioned the Jamaica Bay landfill issue. It would have to be done. But the part of the bay directly adjacent to the airport is already dead (killed off by the last expansion, again as per the RPA report.) That' the only part of the bay that would be necessary to fill.

The fact you can't fix everything at once doesn't mean you fix nothing. Runway expansion will probably take decades, and Cuomo will long since be retired. It's a very complex political and environmental issue.

With what money? Since I last posted here, Covid broke out, and all government revenues have plummeted, as has airline traffic. This isn't going to start for five years or more.

Terminal construction isn't planned till 4Q 2021. So at least a year away.

This will be a gigantic project for the PA, much bigger than the LGA and EWR projects. It will be nice to finally have three updated airports.

While I’m excited for the terminals to be rebuilt I hope that this isn’t the final design. I find it very basic.

The current JFK terminal 1 is such a joke. Thank God this terminal is finally being replaced.

The design for the new terminal looks better than any existing terminal at any of the NY airports. Granted, the competition isn't exactly fierce, but it still looks like the best. Looks pretty grand and distinctive.

Also, I just used LGA for the first time since the rebuild. WOW, what a difference. From possibly worst major airport in the U.S. to now one of the best.

I totally agree, I just wished we could have gotten a Foster or something.

The new Port Authority Bus Terminal is budgeted at $12 billion. The WTC PATH station was $4 billion, about a decade ago.

$10 billion sounds about right for a major airport terminal.

Easily $10 Billion here in NYC and if it's built by the Port Authority expect cost overruns by the billions bringing the cost to $15-$18B!!

The cost of construction per SF is much higher in NYC then any other city in the world.. thanks to the corrupt unions!

I'm all for a new terminal one...but the renderings look horrible.

It looks 100 years older than anything being built in china.

That China terminal looks terrible. Having been in too many of those "showplace" terminals, I get a headache just looking at the pic.

The developing world terminals are usually functionally horrible. Flyers want reliability, convenience and comfort, not deafening, inefficient echo chambers. Give me good coffee, carpeted floors (no terrazzo, please!) and a business class lounge.

That is not accurate. The federal Passenger Facility Charge has been capped at $4.50 for about twenty years.

Local airport operators assess various rates and charges to airlines but market forces limit what they can charge.
