Great shot!

Still don't think I'm a fan of all these colored lights in the skyline though. The red, white, and blue is reminding me of Captain America, a comic book hero. It's good to be patriotic, but New York is a global center of commerce and industry.

The ESB colors change every night, depending on the occasion.

It isn't like it's some political statement. They have colors for holidays (religious and national) colors for random things like Columbia and NYU (at graduation), colors for world events, and I think you can even "rent" the colors.

Here a site, which based on the date, the colors change. You can see various events have various color combos.

Heres an awsome light show, the ESB went nuts that night...

5 minute mark is awesome, turn sound on some good music

On December 20, 2013, the Empire State Building kicked off the first of its five Christmas light shows by illuminating its world-famous LED tower lights in holiday hues. Over 15,000 channels of the building's LEDs were synchronized to holiday-themed music that was broadcasted on Clear Channel New York's radio station 106.7 Lite fm. Tonight's song selection included "Holly Jolly Christmas" by Burl Ives and "Christmas Wrapping" by The Waitresses. Internationally-acclaimed lighting designer Marc Brickman choreographed the show.

If those colors remind you of captain America then the problem isn't with the building, the problem is you read too many comic books. ...

I can't believe you can see it from all the way down at WTC. Pretty cool.

Red white blue = New York Rangers, who are vying for the Stanley Cup

When the U.S. Open of Tennis is on the lighting scheme is the green and blue of the USTA.

I like these lighting themes. Even when there is no "theme" at all.

I agree. Some colors are inappropriate in New York or some are just plain ugly together. Who wants purple, green, and red together?

But the pale white + blue seen on Wednesday evenings are absolutely gorgeous. Now that's a color combo they should stick with.

So all of these building have to coordinate with each other with their choices of led lighting concepts??? Give me a break! It's about diversity in the skyline. Each building and/or complex should be able to provide lighting for itself, that it deems appealing. Not because some shmoe in Jersey doesn't like red near purple on the skyline. Get over yourself.

Just to clarify a few things, I was specifically talking about the Empire State Building. It has a horrible selection of colors most of the time. See post #5965, video #2. The building is already a bland art deco when compared to better looking ones like 70 Pine or 40 Wall to have said lighting. Also since it towers over 400 ft. buildings, everyone has to see those vile colors. Hopefully 15 Penn gets built to cover up views from the west side. It will help somewhat.

Anyway the lighting from other buildings (Boa, or Conde Nast) are okay since the only things that light up are the spires which have decent colors most of the time.
(Are you listening Empire State?)

huh?

The ESBs setbacks and art deco details give it an ideal surface with which to play with light.

To segue back on topic, I like the lighting scheme that 432 Park's mechanical floors will have according to the renders. I wonder if it will stay white or if they will try different colors. I think a cool blue would look good.
