Considering the long term plans for Edmonton International i am now thinking that maybe the old control tower will stay and be converted to a HSR and an LRT station.. From what i see in the pictures of the current tower it seems to me like a good use for it. I know i may be thinking out side the box but if the LRT is going to have a station at the air port then why not make use of the old tower . It is a way of saving immediate dollars as well because it could just sit there empty until it is needed for that purpose.

LRT to the airport at YYC is become a heated topic, does anyone in YEG and YYC really think it is worth the money at this point for both our airports?

Right now I'm of the thought that if the LRT is going to go to YEG, it might as well end up in Leduc.

If you take a look at the 25yr. plan for EIA, it clearly shows the potential LRT and HSR line to be East of the parking a fair ways, closer to QE2. Not to say it couldn't change, but that is what they are planning on for now.

Not for Edmonton for some time I'd say. Calgary is a much different story though as the cost (I assume) would be much less, and the volume of passengers headed to locations on the LRT line (downtown, etc.) would be significantly higher.

I don't think it is worth it at either. For Edmonton a single track diesel link with a mid way passing track would be a good place to start, either running to the planned Ellerslie Road LRT or up the CP corridor to Grandin (funny thing is the second direct to downtown option might be cheaper since CP is moving its yard out of the city). For either I would suggest equipment like Toronto's air-rail link, a good FRA compliant diesel multiple unit.

For Calgary if you can squeeze on the CP line a straight shot to downtown would be good too, otherwise good bus connections to the LRT, downtown, and the NW are good enough. The amount of detour through non-ridership generating areas for LRT in Calgary if built from the NE is almost as high as from Edmonton International from south Edmonton when you add it up!

Bigtime - it indeed was a TU 154...I was on it as Canada's open skies flight monitor....

She was much prettier to look at while chocked up on Apron II at YEG. I was thinking of taking out the IPhone and snapping a few low qual pics but it was oilpatch rush hour so tons of people were coming/going at the gates there. Too much activity.

Looks like Ottawa is getting an increase in their Fra flight to daily.

As per 17JUN11 GDS timetable display, Air Canada is increasing Winter service on Ottawa – Frankfurt route to Daily, from Winter 2010′s 5 weekly level. Operational aircraft remains Boeing 767-300ER

The Star Alliance member’s Ottawa – London Heathrow service remains unchanged, Daily 767-300ER operation.

Schedule:

AC838 YOW1700 – 0635+1FRA 763 D
AC839 FRA1430 – 1650YOW 763 D

Obviously they have sufficient slots at FRA to increase flights from Ottawa but not enough for an Edmonton route.

A big fat 'no' for both airports in my opinion. Too much money to build (for the ridership) and too many other badly needed inftrastructure projects in both cities before LRT to either airport makes sense.

I don't think Frankfurt has an issue with lack of slots, it is simply Air Canada's and Lufthansa's choices for flights.

^I would have to guess that with Ottawa being well, Ottawa, that there is considerably more gov't related travel and a higher demand for $$$ tickets.

Frankfurt also has that new runway to the northwest of the terminals, so that will help with any congestion there (I believe the new rwy is mainly for arrivals).

Well, Ottawa gets a little (read: a lot) more ACA lovin' than does Edmonton. For instance, they fly more seats from YXE-->YOW than YXE-->YEG F.F.S.!!! Charlottown (about 1/2 the size of Red Deer) gets a daily flight to YOW. The significant list of turd sized cities in the maritimes and elsewhere with dailies to YOW help support this. If YEG one day gets this 'privilege' from ACA to fly to an important STAR airport like FRA, then it will have to mostly go it alone i.e. local O & D dependent. Ain't gonna happen soon, I'm afraid. Maybe in the 5-10 year window, at best. My 2 cents.... Good on YOW in the meantime.
