Thanks! Really? They cut them back, that's too bad, but I understand keeping the gardens clean in public spaces.

yeah, your definitely right, super sheltered locations like that on the downtown peninsula be the last to die back.

Thanks No doubt it might have been 7 or 8 earlier, but here I noticed a thin layer of ice on these small ponds, which would have been in shadow most of the time, near False Creek around 4:40PM.

Mild and rainy with strong winds. Every flake of snow is gone ahead of our coming deep freeze. It's very grey, very dark.

-6C and snow in Moncton at 8 AM. About 10 cm of snow down, with another 10 cm on the way.

City plows were unusually tardy this morning. Main routes were plowed, but subdivision streets were untouched. Happily my 2015 4WD BMW X3 is literally a snowplow in it's own right, so I had no difficulty getting in to the hospital on time.

Snow will stop by noontime. The remainder of the forecast period is benign, but cold for the next couple of days.

-it’s colder in Ottawa than Iqaluit
-the cold spot in Canada is in Ontario (-43.4 C in Armstrong)

Current temps show -36 in Regina and Saskatoon with a wind chill of -47. Holy god damn! -21 here feels brutal, looking forward to -6 as our high then temps above freezing this week. Environment Canada is forecasting 11 on Sunday, doubt we will see that though.

I saw on a TV screen that there was a -46 in northern Ontario this morning.

Anyone know where that was?

The coldest I found was -40 in Kirkland Lake and -39 in Timmins.

These are the type of temperatures where winter clothing insulated with down really shines, and definitely mitts (not gloves) weather.

-41.8 in Geraldton is the coldest I found so far.

Edit: according to the picture posted by mcminsen it was -43.4 in Armstrong.

https://meso.cssl.ca/ This website has EnvCanada stations plus some natural resources/forestry sites and also some temp gauges that are along highways I think. I saw a -43 c there I think this morning. Algonquin Park was -33 c I think and a place between Parry Sound and North Bay was about -36.

Very cold today, -11 and a mix of sun and clouds. Not very windy, which is nice.

Overall, it looks like the cold snap won't be quite as nasty as originally thought; no lows are predicted below -20 and no day time lows below -15 as was predicted a few days ago.

We will be back close to, albeit slightly below seasonal by the weekend. This is statistically around the coldest time of the year on average, so it's fitting.

Long forecast from TWN has us going back below seasonal to round out the month and start February. Definitely a real winter this year, no warmth at all on the horizon!

Some parts of the USA like Columbus, Ohio and Pittsburgh have been slightly colder than us this January, despite the average being quite a bit warmer.

Merino wool is also a must, on really cold days that's my base layer snowboarding and I find I can get a little sweaty still!

^ yeah down is bit bulky for any kind of physical activity.

I was more thinking waddling out to your car or other moderate type activities. A big down jacket is like putting on a warm blanket, even at these temps.

-22 here this morning but up to -2 by midnight. Got down to -27 on Saturday morning and up to -16 by afternoon. But clear sunny skies so it felt quite nice. Even out Deep freeze festival went ahead. Temps the rest of the week are above normal.

And got a night ride in just before the temps went down on Thursday.
