The RBC at Portage and Arlington has shut down for good. What could feasibly occupy a custom space like that? Any reasonable hope of a teardown being more likely than a repurpose?

Interesting as it has had a sign on it since at least 2007 saying "Royal Bank proudly serving this community since 1913). I guess they are not proud to be serving the community in that area anymore.

Looking at Google maps it appears that they want their customers to go to the one next closest RBC branch on Ellice Ave by Empress St.

As to what could go in there, the long closed BMO by my place in East Kildonan is now a restaurant and the owners use the vault as their dry storage area. A large number of the closed bank branches seem to end up eventually being rented out for some other use.

Bank branches in general seem to be closing rapidly, due mostly I imagine to the proliferation of online banking, which will only accelerate as the generational shift completes itself

I guess there is also a smaller demand for Safety Deposit boxes in the vault as that would be one of the few things to really drive foot traffic into a branch.

The Wyndham hotel being built on urban reserve near Polo Park is moving at amazing pace. Wherever their construction company is deserves huge kudos. The building is built, the windows are in, the outside finish work is being done, etc. I believe they just broke ground around six months ago. Definitely changes the skyline coming down Route 90.

Yes, PCL...they know how to get things done.

This is why we will see Wawanesa move fast.

Welcome to the Forum Kenure!

There hasn't been much talk lately on the St. Charles. There was some speculation here that the owner is sitting on it hoping that it will need to be torn down due to saftey... so they can build a parking lot

I also have been asking for years.
Owned by non interested lawyer Ken Zaifman, he is in fact doing the minimum by law and no law seems to be able to ignite him to renovate as he he would ovre a dozen years past.
His true intention has always been to see it fall into a decrepit mess so he can use that as an excuse to tear it down for a cement lot! That is taking a page from The Bedford / Reiss fiasco a few years back, but they made him build a parkade with rebuilding the ruined building in the exact style as the one that had to be torn down.
If you do not want to care for a historic building, don't buy them.
he comes across as a typical shyster lawyer.
I spoke to Cindy Tugwell and she said there is nothing they can do.
Public embarrassment? humiliation perhaps?
That would have been a key to getting that stretch of the Exchange bustling again.

The St.Charles Hotel must be approaching 20 years that it has now been empty.

I worked next door (Electric Railway Chambers) in like 2005 and would go there for drinks ('Harry's Bar!') after work.

It closed shortly around that time.

I would venture to guess that its owner Ken Zaifman is the whole reason why the derelict buildings bylaw even exists.

A classic case of 'Demolition by Neglect.'

I am suddenly reminded of another Exchange District building whose owners deferred 80 years worth of repairs and then magically got their wish for lower property taxes and a garbage-strewn field.

It's still a vacant lot a decade later.

Interestingly, the old SHANGHAI neon sign was still alive and kicking as of a few years back.

Apparently something called Devil May Care Brewing Company is moving downtown to 155 Fort Street. This should be a nice addition to the area.

And the owners insisted after 2 years a residential/seniors block with ground retail would for sure materialize..lol..yeah right...We need to do something about St Charles and act now!
