I know what 2600 sqft looks like, and for a skyscraper it's not at all 'that big'.

It's so big it's serviced by a steel staircase instead of an elevator.

I rest my case. There is no need for floors this small in size, but only to achieve that WTB title, among others. A cheap way of going upon gaining that title, which is why I'm glad the Al Burj will become a reality.

Thumbs down

I would agree with a previous poster that it was fine until the steel started. Now it just looks way to elongated and frail at the top. I would definitely NOT go up there.

Its basically an antenna from here on out. I doubt anyone will even occupy the remaining floors. Skyscrapers have cheated to become the tallest before. I respect the Taipei 101 because it finally beat the Sears Tower by highest occupied floor. Where as the Patrona Towers beat the Sears Tower with spires. I don't really have a problem with this the Burj having the antenna since it's beating every other skyscraper records with or without it. I really like the design of the Burj, it's just really skinny and small for it's height and just not impressive no matter how tall it is. The Al Burj will do everything the Burj Dubai didn't do. It will without a doubt impress the world and send a strong message.

I don't think regular people are going to care that it looks skinny. They will be impressed because it is the tallest structure in the world. I haven't seen it in person, but from the reactions of forumers, I'm pretty sure that this building looks massive when you are right next to it. Also it is supposed to be skinny because it comes to a point at the top! They could've left these floors unused and maybe some people on this forum would've been pleased (for I don't know what reason), but it wouldn't have been economical.

The point of this building was to be the tallest in the world and being in Dubai (especially with all the other construction) it doesn't need to have the biggest sq footage. I think we should all accept this tower for what it is.

Last, the Burj Dubai will always be 643.3 m tall in my book. The roof height is a far as I will go with any skyscraper. Anything else doesn't matter whether it be spires, antennas, are any other structure. And that's being nice because I'd rather only consider top floor since people is the purpose a skyscraper serves.

No, the roof is listed at 643.3 m. What you're seeing now is the end of the skyscraper and the beginning of an antenna/spire.

OK ...

You guys are entitled to your opinion and I respect that.

My opinion is because it is a structure that is taller than even guyed masts and by a large margin I like the idea that it thins out to a point. This thing is paving the way for structures of heights unheard of 5 years ago. I too am looking forward to Al Burj becoming the next WTS and perhaps the Jeddah mile high after that. For now though the Burj Dubai is a great design and has a complex arrangment of tiers and levels - along with the height that is why I like it so much.

Today is IMO the most imortant day for skyscrapers in 75 odd years. With the Burj Dubai becoming the tallest manmade structure on Earth ( at 630.5 m. ) the fact that it is a free standing structure ( I hesitate to use the word building as it is so much more than that ) overtaking guyed masts I think it is news as big as the ESB was in its day. Ever since ESB the tallest structure was supported was it not ?

Also the last named level with a use is the one being erected right now - level 160 mezz. 3. After this there is stairs, ladders, and platforms right to the top but no officially occupied levels. There is higher tiers that have what they call roofs though.

Here is the first 3 pages of my 11 page plan.

From a distant horizon, the upper steel section gives an industrial smoke-stack impression.

I really loved Burj Dubai when I first saw it, but it's starting to wear on me.

I think it's the lack of a true skyline. That, combined with the skinny design, makes it look kinda strange. I don't know. Certainly a magnificent achievement.
