First, pardon the double post.
Second, I had a chance this weekend to see the executive summary the State of Utah submitted to the Air Force for locating the permanent headquarters of the USAF Cyber Command at Hill AFB. Outstanding proposal. There is a chance, although probably no better than 50/50, that Hill AFB will wind up as the new headquarters for Air Force Cyber Command.
I say no better than 50/50 because the proposal made clear a glaring disadvantage in Utah's generally rosy development environment--all of the State's colleges and universities (including BYU) produce only 1,200 technology graduates (engineering and the physical sciences, including mathematics) a year. While this may sound like a lot for a state of less than 3 M people, it is clearly not enough to supply the 5 to 10K contractor jobs that will follow the command within the first year or two of operation, leaving too many critical jobs to be filled by relocation, which seldom attracts more than 20 % of necessary personnel.
I raise this issue because maybe it's now time to address another impediment to development in Utah (in addition to Salt Lake Intl.)--that is, the lack of science and engineering grads coming out of local institutions. The state produces more than enough technicians, but not nearly enough technical people with bachelors degrees.
The schools cannot be just diploma mills either. There must be research going on as well, to attract and keep first rate faculty and to do the necessary basic research that only a university can do.
Maybe it's time to create a new institution because investing in existing institutions will water down the investments across all colleges and universities. Maybe it's time to build something like a Utah Institute of Technology, patterned after MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Duke, Ga Tech, Purdue,Texas Tech, and Cal Tech, to name just a few. The economic benefit from such a school would be beyond belief.
