Yeah, but what I was implying was that I suspect it's pretty normal for drivers loosing the centre lane to push it for as long as they can and end up trapped in it while they try to worm their way into the right hand lane.
In theory, both directions get the red "X"s for a long enough time for drivers to get out of the way before the other direction gets a green arrow, but I gotta believe that it can be hairy any day of the week. Those bridges are getting to the point where they don't really have a prevailing direction, there's a ton of traffic going north AND south every rush hour and beyond.
So when you try to compress two lanes of traffic into one, chaos ensues. And the longer you leave the yellow arrows on and the dual-direction red "X"s, the more people realize there there's a whole empty lane sitting there some drivers will figure "why not sneak into it?" Single Occupancy vehicles aren't supposed to be using the HOV lanes either, but does that stop them?
Anyone who rushes into the middle lane right after it turns green for their direction would be a fool not to be extra cautious...
Yeah traffic was gridlocked from Denman all the way into the causeway so there was no where to go. But even then I thought the operator had to check the cameras to verify it was clear before switching the lanes. It was only green that way for 10 seconds before they switched them both to red.
... As previously indicated earlier this year, the return of Stanley Park Drive to a configuration that closely resembles the pre-pandemic configuration includes providing an additional vehicle exit out of the park through the West End. However, the Park Board states the process to remove the bike lane on the roadway through Ceperley Meadow is “more complex” and will require further design and implementation work between the Second Beach parking lot entrance to the intersection of Beach Avenue and Park Lane.
The intention is to reduce traffic congestion, as the only option for vehicles is to turn left from Stanley Park Drive onto North Lagoon Drive to reach West Georgia Street, which experiences severe traffic backups. By allowing vehicles to continue straight past North Lagoon Drive, they can turn left onto Park Lane and leave the area through the West End.
“This exit into the West End requires the support of an external contractor due to the sophisticated design components needed to ensure that vehicle and bike traffic can safely co-exist when the temporary bike lane is removed, with the Beach Avenue cycle lane remaining in place,” reads the bulletin.
No specific timeline has been established for creating a Stanley Park exit via Park Lane to help address traffic congestion on West Georgia Street.
Thursday drove into Stanley Park and yes it was a pleasure to drive (first day the barriers where removed).
Tourist and visitors were welcome to drive very slowly and take in the scenery knowing there was a second lane for passing.

Burrard from Pacific to Davie St has 4 sets of lights in <350m. So long as they're generally coordinated timing wise, the street shouldn't operate too differently than today.
There's a no left turn restriction westbound on Cornwall at Arbutus, so I think there will be additional traffic on Vine
(which also leads to the Safeway on 4th Ave.)
The City has a traffic counter (i.e. the hoses across the road) on Vine just south of Cornwall for this.

I think they added some new four way stops around there as well.
