Congrats! I'm not that far behind. My wife and I had broken ground on our first baby a few months ago and she is due around the 2nd week of Dec. Can't wait.

AS PLANNED CITIES go, they don't come much more premeditated than Salt Lake City. The downtown core's gargantuan blocks and incredibly wide streets weren't an accident.

So Salt Lake is embarking on a major redevelopment effort under an umbrella plan called Downtown Rising in which nearly $2 billion will be invested in new offices, residential and retail buildings, arts, culture and governmental facilities and transit projects.

"Seattle-based retailer Nordstrom was one of the drivers behind the redevelopment effort generally and City Creek in particular."

Oh, that's rich!! It's not exactly how I remember it happening, but whatever. Otherwise, a good article. Very complimentary from a writer in a city of the caliber of Seattle, which is leaps and bounds ahead of us in the quality, and quantity, of it's functional, vibrant, and different neighborhoods. (Sorry--I love Seattle!) I don't know if Downtown Rising is as 'coordinated' as the writer thinks it is, but it's a solid plan, with a broad base of support. I can only hope that the improvements in that plan actually come to fruition.

Congrats Wren! Just wait until your first night at home looking down at YOUR child sleeping in your arms at two in the morning if you want atavistic surrealism...

Then again, it is surreal to me that my oldest daughter is a sophmore in high school and will leave the nest in three years....

It goes so fast...

Old salt lake city construction photos?

I was just wondering if anybody has any old downtown SLC construction photos they would be willing to share. Maybe from the 90's with the construction of "Gateway West Tower", "Wells Fargo building", "Grand America Hotel" or even the "Gateway"
Anyways I thought this would be a fun way to look back on some of the older construction projects back in the day.

(LDS) Church Office Building's 26th Floor offers Salt Lakes Best Views

By Lynn Arave
Deseret News

Temple Square is Utah's most popular tourist attraction, even eclipsing the state's national parks. However, some visitors to the Square -- especially Salt Lake-area residents -- don't ever seem to have a breathtaking visit to the 26th floor "Observation Deck" of the LDS Church Office Building on their agenda.

This often-neglected or under-publicized, free-admission visitor opportunity is well worth the time. After all, the Church Office Building at 50 E. North Temple is still the tallest building in Utah.

From two floors below the top of the 28-floor, 435-foot-tall office building, visitors can gaze out on the Salt Lake Valley from a bird's-eye view.

A new beginning

Wrendog: Congrats and all the best. I spent the first two days of this week with my youngest going through new student orientation at GA Tech. It goes by too fast. Savor every moment.

The lookout deck only offers views of Temple square, the Utah State Capitol Building, and the mountains, but falls short of offering the public a view of Downtown. More people would visit if it offered that.

Yes that may be true, but one can only view the West side of the valley, not the East. The East side of the valley was cut off to the public.

I haven't been to the observation deck in years but last time I was able to visit both the east deck and west deck. When did the east deck close and why?

Also, the article says the LDS Church Office Building is 435 feet tall? Since when? Did they add on to it or are they mistaken? Last I checked, the Wells Fargo Center was the tallest at 422 feet with the LDS Church Office Building at 420. Correct me if I am wrong.

P.S. - Happy 4th everyone. Have fun and go to the events, but be safe!

Last time I was up there was in the late 80's. I was told it was closed to the public for security reasons also because the president of the church had his office in what was once the Hotel Utah. Maybe someone else who knows why and can validate what I was told?

The North side of the 26th floor is available for tours and viewing both East and West of the building.

The South side of the 26th floor has been set aside as a banquet/ball room area for employees. They used to have the Christmas parties and other holiday gatherings there.

Regarding building height. I think that they are stating 435' from the plaza on the South side of the building. Isn't official building height measure from the street side? North Temple is roughly 15' higher then the South side plaza.
