At first I thought you had the street numbers wrong until I realized a LARGE residence has recently been built on the empty lot behind the boy on his bike.

......The three homes (visible in the 1954 photograph) are farther down the street and partially hidden by foliage.

As you can see the boy is riding his bike giggle between the family's home (circled) and the three homes in the distance (rectangle).


You may also note:

The old right-of-way for red line streetcars (now a popular hiking path) is below the family's home. Hmm, were red cars still running on the line in 1954?

The eBay slides show the north gate on Washington Boulevard. The is the side with the colonnades.

I'm pretty sure that this road was called "Justica" and I agree that this is not Spring Street. I believe the road went from Sunset to Temple next to the Broadway Tunnel. I seem to remember a picture similar to this one on the LAPL site.

I found another image of Justica, similar to the one above, at the USCDL. I think we've probably seen it before.

Well, over the years Justicia suffered the fate of so many early roadbeds being known by various names. At the time of Martin's original pic (dating by the late 20s/early 30s cars) Justicia while still known by most old timers as Justicia had also become known as Buena Vista and even N. Broadway (with which it aligned north of Sunset). From Sunset looking south, it reached all the way to Temple where it ended directly across from the County Courthouse. In Hoss' pic you can see Justicia as a dirt track coming from Sunset and being paved south of Ft. Moore Place. Notice all the parked cars from that point down to the courthouse (out of frame at the bottom) and alongside of the brand new Hall of Justice. This little street was always one of my personal favorites.
