Porter's YWG-YOW route commences today.

United Airlines's ORD/DEN flights to YWG re-commence next Thursday.

Behold. IATA code is the one you will generally see and hear used. There are too many even just in North America to feasibly post directly here.

WAA really should make sure it posts every new route announcement, and every service inauguration on its website.

Agreed, although they do seem to keep pace with these announcements on their social media pages, like LinkedIn and Facebook.

CGP Grey on YouTube has a great explanation about them here.

He also explains the numbers on the runways here.

Yes… we live in a media environment that seems to like social. But I’d guess that more people go to their webpage to look up flight status than have subscribed to their social feed. Probably by a large factor. The social people might not look at that, but advertising and communications people would not miss that fact, and would make use of it.

YHU now the Montreal Metropolitan airport has a new site and lists Winnipeg as a destination. I can only assume this is in regards to Porter. What this means for YWG getting PD service from YUL though, I'm not sure.

AC reverting YWG-YOW back to year-round service. Good to see competition on this route from all three airlines (AC, WS and PD) year-round.

As a general rule on airport codes anything starting with a Y is in Canada. Also a lot of the codes are logical abbreviations of the city name. From there you just need to learn exceptions like Chicago, New York, Toronto and Montreal that have multiple airports. Phoenix too but the main airport, Skyharbour, uses PHX so its only the smaller airports you would need to get codes on.

I have heard it observed - and I think it’s true - that true competition doesn’t just mean multiple airlines flying the same routes at the same times with similar equipment. So the Winnipeg-Ottawa route is kind of interesting to watch.

Looking at a day in September, assuming that's the schedule going forward, the YWG-YOW schedule will be:
Carrier - dep YWG - arr YOW
Porter - 06:00 - 09:32
Air Canada - 06:45 - 10:09
Westjet - 17:15 - 20:42

On the return YOW-YWG:
Porter - 16:05 - 17:52
Air Canada - 18:30 - 20:17
Westjet - 21:35 - 23:26

Porter is definitely set up for connections in YOW in both directions. AC is probably a little better timed. Westjet should be timed for connections in YWG, but isn’t. But offering a late afternoon flight on the eastbound will probably appeal to a fair number of passengers. Although I have to wonder if they’d be better off overnighting the aircraft at YOW and having a morning westbound to support connections, and not split traffic for people travelling at the same time of day as AC and PD flights.

With domestic tickets basically all being one-way, I would expect at least a percentage of people to book different carriers in each direction. I don’t know whether this is good or not, just interesting. Not typical of competition on most routes.

If the PD YWG-YOW route is successful, I still believe they will add a second flight at some point before the end of the year. But yes, the YWG-YOW routes will be interesting to observe over the next little while.

I am not familiar with FLL at all, but it seems like it's essentially a secondary airport to Miami, being only half an hour from the city centre proper. So in essence, YWG kind of have seasonal flights to Miami now
