Can't understand why they're painting that brick at 181 Balmoral. I love the red/brown brick buildings of West Broadway.

They did that with Colony Square too. And they were such distinctive buildings in our skyline. Now you don't even notice them.

Then it becomes a maintenance issue. Wait 'til it starts peeling off. Just ridiculous.

For the most part it is the interior and windows of these buildings that need work not the exterior brick. I love the look of the original brick against a new black frame window like we see in the Exchange.

Ya it really is a shame. The red brick is part of the character of the buildings, not to mention adds some warmth to the street in winter time. Painting things grey should be banned in winter cities. It's just so bleak and soulless.

I completely agree. Lack of color in the winter creates a depressing atmosphere. I notice a lot of the buildings around the city are this ugly bleak dull grey color. Ins

I was looking around and stumbled on an updated(?) render of the development at 198 Sherbrook St.

The old image is still there too. This one appears to be much more dramatic with its diagonal facade. https://alstonproperties.com/development/

The Leaf has an article about the Rainbow Resource Centre moving into the Wilson House on Broadway. They plan to build a new 4 story affordable housing block on the same lot.

Probably because the lot is for sale and that’s what the owners want to do.

That would be great. Love what Rainbow Resource Centre does, but their little stucco building is a little sad, and the lots across the street are all being built up, seems like a natural place to put a nice little 6-storey

Unknown to me, the point I was really trying to make is that the lot is more valuable to the builder as a building than a garden, which is ultimately the answer to the question you posted.

This is part of why cities are often reluctant to let totally unused land get used for urban gardening. Just like how "temporary" parking lots are rarely temporary, any land that ever gets used for an urban garden (even explicitly temporary) will face absolute hell from the neighbourhood if the land ever sees a development plan.
