then there's this article:
VANCOUVER — Telus has bought naming rights to the former General Motors Place, The Vancouver Sun has learned.
The Vancouver Canucks announced earlier today that General Motors had relinquished naming rights to the arena. An announcement of the arena's new name is scheduled for 2 p.m. today, but a source told The Sun late this morning that Telus's name will be on the building.
The arena is expected to be called Telus Place.
The arena has been called General Motors Place since it opened in 1995. It took on the name Canada Hockey Place during the recent Winter Olympics.
Telus freed up some corporate sponsorship money when it recently announced that it would no longer sponsor the Canadian Skins Game, a made-for-TV golf event that was held last month at Bear Mountain in Victoria.
General Motors will remain a significant corporate partner of the Canucks. The company will retain what the Canucks call "category exclusivity” at the arena and will engage in promotions that will include rink board advertising, a “Canucks vision‚” feature, wall murals and other consumer outreach initiatives. “General Motors has been an integral part of our business for many years,” Victor de Bonis, chief operating officer for Canucks Sports & Entertainment, said in a news release. “Our home Arena has hosted some of the biggest events in the history of our country and we are fortunate that General Motors has been a loyal partner for so long. We are excited about our continuing sponsor partnership that will align with General Motors‚ new business priorities.”
