It was very crude and very inappropriate for national television. But is was also very, very funny in its complete irreverence. Of course, Chicago got the last laugh after that crushing, humiliating defeat.

Apparently Luongo is up for sale on Craigslist lol:

http://www.vancitybuzz.com/2010/05/roberto-luongo-craigslist-ad-for-sale.html

Any body got 10 million laying around and need a greased up goalie? lol.

I'm on the Habs ship now. Halak has been almost god like for them. Too bad Roberto can't channel his first year Canucks performance.

Time to strip the C and added pressure from him?

The thing is, if Halak plays like this until his next contract, then he will be paid within spitting distance of Luongo's salary, too. At some point, overperforming players have to get their due. See Kesler. It's great to lock in players far below their value like Burrows (his playoff performance aside), but you can't build a team around contracts like that, you can only hope that circumstances land a couple of them in your lap at the right time.

Setting my Flames bias aside for a moment.

Sorry to say this, but you Canuck fans rag on Luo to much. I mean the guy usually plays 75 games a year with very few nights off. Keep in mind he missed 6 games with broken ribs and didn't have the luxury of time off to rest like most of these guys got during the Olympic break. He worked his ass off to get that gold medal. He is the ONLY player in the league that can claim that he won a gold medal for Canada on home ice city that he plays in. Thats a feat in and of itself. He doesn't need to win the Stanley Cup this year, and I'm honestly surprised that him and the Canucks made it past the first round. If I were a GM or coach or shitty defense, I'd only pray I had a guy half as good as Luongo on my team to pull off those miracles that he does.

If the Canucks and Canuck fans are done with him, I could think of 29 other teams in the league that would love to have the guy.

...now, I need a shower, I feel dirty for sticking up for a Canuck. LOL

I don't like the Luongo hate either, but I'm looking at two things right now.

1. His stats were 15th out of 16 goalies in the playoffs. D is part of that, but not the whole story.

2. He will be the top paid player in the entire NHL next year.

No more GM Place as Canucks home to get a new name

VANCOUVER — General Motors Place got a new name during the Winter Olympics, and the home of the Vancouver Canucks is about to get a new, permanent moniker.

The Canucks announced this morning a new sponsor partnership with General Motors of Canada Ltd., but that new deal does not include naming rights for the arena.

The Canucks have a news conference scheduled for 2 p.m. today to announce a new naming rights partner.

The arena has been called General Motors Place since it opened in 1995. It took on the name Canada Hockey Place during the recent Winter Olympics.

General Motors will remain a significant corporate partner of the Canucks. The company will retain what the Canucks call "category exclusivity” at the arena and will engage in promotions that will include rink board advertising, a “Canucks vision” feature, wall murals and other consumer-outreach initiatives.

“General Motors has been an integral part of our business for many years,” Victor de Bonis, chief operating officer for Canucks Sports & Entertainment, said in a news release. “Our home Arena has hosted some of the biggest events in the history of our country and we are fortunate that General Motors has been a loyal partner for so long. We are excited about our continuing sponsor partnership that will align with General Motors’ new business priorities.”

Personally, I'd say just because Xwayxway Park was denied as a new name for Stanley Park, this should be an opportunity to honor them some how. Canucks should rename it Xwayxway House at (insert corporate sponsor name here) or even (insert corporate sponsor name here) Xwayxway Arena

Aquilini Place?

Surely it will not be anything containing "Hockey" or "Canucks", seeing how Aquilini is shopping for an NBA team.

Hmm. I wonder who could possibly want to have the naming rights now.

Maybe Starbucks! Or Lululemon. There's no big bank that doesn't already have an arena somewhere, though RBC could use a Canadian arena.

A&W, with the way they're aggressively expanding thinking they're like Starbucks!

I bet it is Bell. Even though they have Bell Centre in Montreal, they are making a big push out west, and already locked up the Whitecaps MLS kits......

or Telus, to counter the push from Bell into their traditional territory

Nope - It's gonna be Roger's Centre.

Rogers Taking Over GM Place Sponsorship

Gary Mason

Vancouver — Globe and Mail Update
Published on Tuesday, Jul. 06, 2010 1:05PM EDT

The west coast will soon have its own Rogers centre

The Vancouver Canucks are holding a news conference in a couple of hours at which they will announce the new naming sponsor for the team’s arena –GM Place until Tuesday morning. The new sponsor is Rogers Communication, although the new official name of the stadium is to be revealed within hours at a Canucks press conference.

It was widely believed that the contest for naming rights came down to two Canadian communications giants – Rogers and Telus. This will now be the second blow Telus has suffered on the sports sponsorship front. The company lost out to Bell to be the telecommunications sponsor for the 2010 Winter Games.

For Rogers, being attached to the biggest and most popular brand in Vancouver would undoubtedly boost the company’s chances of building its profile on the West Coast.

The company already owns naming rights for a major stadium in Toronto – Rogers Centre, home of the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Globe has learned that Telus discussed the possibility of taking over the naming sponsorship with the Vancouver Canucks. The domain name registry domaintools.com lists the website url telusplace.com as having been registered by Vancouver Canucks Limited Partnership on January 7 2010.

Telus spokesman Shawn Hall said the domain registration was probably a defensive move by the Canucks in case a possible naming partnership went through.

“We evaluate sponsorships and naming rights for public venues against a set of criteria to ensure good return to our investors as well as our community,” said Mr. Hall. “The proposal they put forward did not meet our needs.

Mr. Hall said Telus will not be the company unveiled as the naming sponsor on Tuesday afternoon, but that the wireless company has other sponsorships with the Canucks.

then there's this article:

VANCOUVER — Telus has bought naming rights to the former General Motors Place, The Vancouver Sun has learned.

The Vancouver Canucks announced earlier today that General Motors had relinquished naming rights to the arena. An announcement of the arena's new name is scheduled for 2 p.m. today, but a source told The Sun late this morning that Telus's name will be on the building.

The arena is expected to be called Telus Place.

The arena has been called General Motors Place since it opened in 1995. It took on the name Canada Hockey Place during the recent Winter Olympics.

Telus freed up some corporate sponsorship money when it recently announced that it would no longer sponsor the Canadian Skins Game, a made-for-TV golf event that was held last month at Bear Mountain in Victoria.

General Motors will remain a significant corporate partner of the Canucks. The company will retain what the Canucks call "category exclusivity” at the arena and will engage in promotions that will include rink board advertising, a “Canucks vision‚” feature, wall murals and other consumer outreach initiatives. We are excited about our continuing sponsor partnership that will align with General Motors‚ new business priorities.”

lol... is it Rogers or Telus??!! Two very conflicting reports

Seems the Vancouver Sun has scrubbed the report, and doesn't talk about Telus at all, now.

I don't see the point in calling it Rogers Centre.. with Rogers shuttering their home video rental business, the only presence they have on the west coast is their cellular division. Not like out east where they have cable services..

In any case, we'll have to wait until 2pm to find out.
