The rendering wasn't posting properly, so check out the link:

Megaproject next to 49ers stadium begins to take shape

Plans for two of Silicon Valley's highest-profile real estate developments in decades are coming into focus for the area around the Levi's Stadium, where the 49ers will begin playing in 2014.
Related California, a subsidiary of the huge real estate firm Related Companies, today said it envisions eventually building out 1.5 million square feet of retail, 2.4 million square feet of office, a hotel and hundreds of residential units on a massive chunk of city land in Santa Clara.
At the same time, a group that includes ex-49ers quarterback Joe Montana fleshed out its plans for an adjacent property that also will include an upscale hotel, a Montana-operated restaurant, retail and office.

Redwood City Caltrain development

we've mentioned this one before, but now it's happening: the area around Redwood City's Caltrain station is about to start feeling much denser, as an adjacent parking lot is about to give way to a mid-rise office building with room for 1000 employees called 'Crossing 900'. (doubt there is a loss of parking, tho, since the project includes over 900 spaces)

at least for now, I pass by the site every workday, so can get shots as things progress.

Eight Acre North Oakland Development Set To Break New Ground

Having been waylaid by the BART strike, the ground breaking for Phase Two of MacArthur Station, the master-planned Transit-Oriented Development on BART's former MacArthur Station parking lot in North Oakland, has been rescheduled for Friday, November 15 at 11am.

Once again, Phase Two of the development will consist of 90 apartments at 40th and Telegraph for households with incomes ranging from 30 to 50 percent of the area's median income...

Good looking stuff. I wanna see more high rises though. The Bay Area needs to get out of it's suburban NIMBY mindset and start building highrise apartments all over the place.

San Francisco is definitely getting its fair share of highrises at the moment, but apart from that there doesn't seem to be a need for them anywhere else. However, one thing is for sure, the Bay Area is going to start building up around the BART stations. With the modern mindset of less driving and more walking, BART is exploding in terms of development. Union City, where I currently live, is already the nicest and most progressed station in the East Bay. It really is nice to see the city taking strides to beautify the station and make it more attractive to the riders. Along with the beautification, they already have Union City Avalon apartments, low-income housing apartments, and townhouses in walking distance. Second phase of the development will only bring more residences and commercial space.

It'll be interesting to see how it all plays out!

Here's a new project for Oakland that I just read about today:

Name: Lake Merritt Boulevard Apartments
Type: Infill, Residential Mixed-Use
Height: 258'

I snipped this image from the pdf and uploaded it to my flickr acct:

That's a great spot for something like that.

I'm actually extremely excited about this one:

Ellis Partners proposes two 20-story towers for Jack London Square
Blanca Torres
Reporter- San Francisco Business Times
Nov 15, 2013, 2:54pm PST

Ellis Partners LLC is revamping its plans to transform Jack London Square with a proposal to build up to 665 housing units.

The developer submitted an application to the City of Oakland to amend a previous development plan. The new plan calls for two housing towers of more than 20 stories on sites currently entitled for office and housing development.

The sites involved are:
A parcel at the corner of Broadway and Embarcadero currently used for surface parking that is across from the former Barnes & Noble store. It was approved for 120,000 square feet of office and retail space.

A parcel on Embarcadero between Harrison and Alice streets entitled for 135,000 square feet of office. The site is next to the Jack London Market building, which has housing and retail space, and the site of a proposed, 248-room hotel...

I couldn't find any renderings yet.

^Me too. JLS should be as desirable as Rockridge or Montclair -- it's such a fantastic and scenic area with a variety of access options. I'm not sure what, but one day something will happen (a tipping point of residents, an anchor retail and/or dining presence, something) to push it over the top.

We need more high-rises in Oakland, in both the Lake Merritt and Jack London Square areas.

New residential development in Berkeley is ceremonially breaking ground today. From SocketSite:

Quote:
Gerding Edlen and the city of Berkeley will hold a ceremonial ground breaking for "Higby" this afternoon, a mixed-use development with 98 residential units and 6,500 square feet of ground floor restaurant and retail space to be built at 3015 San Pablo Avenue on the southeast corner of San Pablo and Ashby Avenue (a.k.a. 1200 Ashby).

While the final design is being refined, the development will rise five stories with a mix of studios, one-bedrooms, and two’s and 114 parking spaces (98 spaces for residents).

And San Jose has two highrises under construction. From the SJ Mercury News:

Quote:
The two yellow cranes looming over downtown, the first ones seen in years, are at the sites of two high-rise residential projects, the 23-story One South Market building and the 21-story Centerra complex. Between the two buildings, that will mean nearly 650 new units that city leaders hope are filled with enough people to bring downtown to the tipping point it has been chasing for a quarter century.
I had noticed site clearing for One South Market several months ago (click link for rendering). Nice to see it progressing.

Edit: Found a photo of both cranes on SSC.

Is San Jose the largest city in America with the smallest skyline? It is a city of over 1 million but you wouldn't think it. There are hardly any high rises! Compare it to similarly sized San Diego, which has a booming skyline.

The two are impacted by the same nuisance: airports.

It is clearly different, but other than the US Capitol and Washington monument, I don't think Washington, DC has any buildings taller than 300 feet (the National Cathedral, the old Post Office, and the Basillica are all over 200 feet).
