You aren't going to find too many "pushing the boundaries" skyscrapers in New York because the buildings don't really exists in a vacuum. It's all relatively contextual. It's what the zoning enforces, and that's fine. It's places like LIC in Queens that could use a bit more push in the design direction, but even there zoning has it's limits. Where developers try to move outside the zoning, and have to run through the approvals process, they risk having their development altered in ways they don't want, or even height decreases (as we've seen with 53w53). Building as-of-right has it's rewards. But we've seen with KPF, Shop, etc., you can get some really nice designs that although aren't "groundbreaking", can certainly add to the quality of the cityscape. And we are seeing so many developments now that have moved away from the blue box.
