I'd much, much, rather have one or two other 15-20 storey buildings next to Brunswick Square rather than doubling it's current height, I think that would suit the city a hundred times better, and be easier to fill given our market. Don't get me wrong, I'd love the tallest building in Atlantic Canada, but it'd look pretty bizarre stand out on its own on top of the hill, especially since the design isn't exactly graceful.

Residential Parking

Note to developers....make sure you incorporate off-street parking with your plans.

Note to potential buyers....do NOT buy a home that does not provide off-street parking.

During snow removal times which are announced on the radio (note to city - people do not listen to their radios that much, especially in the evenings) failure to move your car can cost you..

Ticket $20
Towing charge $100
Taxi $7 +

Not to mention that nice cold walk back from wherever you have to move it.

Would I buy a home in uptown Saint John without off-street parking???? Not even if it was free.

All new development in the uptown requires off-street parking - with very few exceptions ie. Tannery Court.

I sympathize with you the cost of retrieving your car after being towed - no doubt it is frustrating and expensive. Having said that, there is an element of personal responsibility that is not ackowledged.

The city not only advertises on the radio and newspaper, you have the option of registering with My Saint John on www.saintjohn.ca - you will get an email alert when a ban is declared. You can also check out their website or dial the snowban number at 658-4040. Lastly is common sense - when the snow is piling up and we are having snow every week - I would be on alert for a snow ban - plus notice that the typically busy streets are pretty much empty.

Snow clearing

I was not effected by this ban but saw the story on the news where over 100 citizens' vehicles were towed. 100!!! What more proof do you need that the system, as it stands, is not working?

By the way, I am subscribed to the city's email alerts and did NOT receive any such notice. I do have sympathy for the crews who have to do the clearing. I just say that the system as it stands is not working.

This may sound like a primitive solution, but what about a city vehicle with a loud speaker system circulating through the effected neighbourhood before the clearing starts. At least I am offering a possible solution.

Gotta be a few mothballed air raid sirens laying around.

Note to car-owners: Parking isn't enforced in the North End.

The SJPF years ago would blare their siren around 2:00 in the morning to warn people. I figure they got too many complaints about that as they haven't done it in years.

I like it, I like it.

And K, I was unsure if the Aquarius deal had been finalized or if it was just hearsay.

So double would be somewhere around 160,000 sq ft. guessing of course.
Where on Westmorland is carquest? Do you mean MacAlister Drive? Walmart would be moving up the hill?

Old Bargain Shop Up For Redevelopment
Posted on January 27, 2011 by Mr. Uptown

While it is disappointing to see any Uptown business close, we can’t help but be slightly excited to find out what might take the place of the old Bargain Shop on the corner of Charlotte & King Streets in the heart of uptown. The store closed this past month after several years of providing shoppers with a nice compliment to the City Market to get various household items at a decent price. While a convenient store, it’s location facing King’s Square is amongst the most strategic in the city and many residents long felt perhaps it could be so much better utilized.

This week, building owner Rod Gillis was on CBC Radio stating his intention to develop the property. We all look forward to hearing some great ideas about what may become of this potentially amazing slice of uptown. Let’s hope the long running IMAX Theatre rumour might someday come true.

It's not a hertigage building, am I right? I can't exactly remember what it looks like. This would be a great location for a tall/slender and modern mixed-use high rise due to its positioning at the top of the hill. Even a modest 10-15stories would rival the height of the Aliant building. Other than north of Union, what better location for the next high-rise? Can't block people's views at the top of the hill and your neighbour is a park!

New Restaurant in Trinity Royal

Not sure if it was mentioned here - Decimal 81 is now open on Princess Street. Hoping they have great success.

I will try and snap a photo someday when I walk by.

But it may cast a shadow over a beloved park King's Square. I think a 5 or 6 story building would be OK though. An ideal place for a 15 story apartment building is the huge empty lot behind Admiral Beatty Building and Imperial Theatre along Princess Street.

I think 10-15 storeys would be fine for that lot, but I have a feeling that no-one will ever propose it due to fear of community backlash.
