I personally would not have included Museum Park Place (red tic-tac-toe building) and Avenue East on the rogue's list - they aren't great buildings, but there are so many other deserving candidates out there...

While I agree with Kamin, his incredibly elitist tone in some of his articles (including this one) makes him insufferable at times.

He continues to talk about Houston, Dallas, and China in derogatory terms, which in a sense makes him incredibly provincial to the time in which we live.

People 100 years from now will not have even remotely the same biases, nor will they be thinking about how 'drive by suburban' some of this architecture is. We can't begin to imagine what kind of world they will be living in nor how they will view these structures.

Nevertheless, I agree with his distaste for all of the buildings that he described. But like most critics, he's accomplished nothing in his career other than a whole lot of tongue lashing, so I begrudgingly listen to his opinion.

I completely agree with this. I think he feels that he should throw in some other architects / styles, just to look less biased.

His criticism of these buildings seems to ignore their good features, and lord knows if there are any good features at all these days, we need to identify and praise them. The complaint instead seems largely based on a rather romantic notion of what their context demands (lake Shore Drive, Medina Athletic Club, etc.).

And, to be honest, although it is obviously rather gross philosophically, I always thought the first Museum Park Place was one of the better-designed PoMo condos in the city. It's far better proportioned than the second and third towers in that group, and the contrasting rhythm in the facade makes it much more elegant than the typical concrete highrise.

Did they seriously put this shitpile on the winners list? I'm not gonna lie, this building is probably the most putrid "vertical turd" of them all! How can they even consider thinking this is a good building? I mean the freaking pus yellow precast (or is it painted? I can't tell, it appears to be precast at least on the lower section) is so fucking bad that it looks like its going to freaking fall off the building piece by piece!

^ I was being sarcastic when I said "winner's list" (I should've used an emoticon) - these are all buildings that Kamin has singled out for being particularly bad.

I'm glad he wrote it but he could have found better examples to criticize besides Avenue East, Lancaster, and Museum Park Place.

^Excatly. At least in 30 years we can teardown some of these POSes and have room for modern scrapers downtown. Still, WAY too many turd have gone up in the boom, especially in the beginning portion.

I doubt it. Demolitions of highrises is terribly expensive, especially when other buildings surround the site tightly.

I think re-cladding is going to become a LOT more common in Chicago as we realize just how bad these buildings are. It's already happening in NY to some 1960s duds.
