Move In This July! 69 of The Metro's 117 condos were sold in the first ten days, setting a record launch for downtown Salt Lake City. We have 16 wonderful two and three bedroom units still available!
It will be good to see this project finish up and finally open. 16 units remaining aint bad either....
If it means more Convention visitors touring temple square, I think the "brethren" may go for it. And it could possibly fulfill D&C 124:56, 60. God orders the building of the Nauvoo House, a hotel, in which Joseph Smith and his "house" will have "place" "from generation to generation (Jan 19, 1841)." Where is that hotel now? For a while, it was the Hotel Utah until that became the Joseph Smith memorial building. Then the Inn at Temple Square justified the "order from God." But now with the demolition of the Inn at Temple Square, where is this Nauvoo House that is supposed to be in existence so Joseph Smith's "House" can have "place?" or is his house now extinct, and it's not necessary anymore?
They'll never go for it, as the LDS Church wasn't too fond of the Salt Lake Plaza Hotel being right next door. In fact, if you look at the building, you'll notice there are no windows on the side facing the LDS Temple, there is a reason for this.
They're not going to allow a hotel there. Not going to happen.

Oh, bother. The reason that the Plaza doesn't have windows on its east side is that its a hotel. Hotels almost never have windows on their short ends beacuse they are long rectangles with a single corridor and rooms on both sides.
The LDS Church may or may not want a hotel there, but it has nothing to do with the D&C or a fear of windows facing Temple Square.
Thank you for your reply Urbanboy and Future Mayor. I couldn't get google earth to install on my computer (F'in Vista!) ... thanks anyways.
Viper: I am really excited for Market Station as well and SSL and how many density projects are popping up in and around the DT area.
...
UrbanBoy:
I like the spot for a hotel, and thought it was funny that you quoted scripture lol, but I don't think the church will go for it. They specifically said they didn't want to be a part of the hotel business because of what some people use hotels for. Also like Furutre Mayor said part of the plaza is being turned into student housing for BYU salt lake. Horrible decision in my opinion. The building is hideous, and horrible design to have there parking garage on S. Temple!!! grrr!
Future Mayor:
I've also thought about the shilo recieving demo and the lot being slated for a big convention hotel, but really why do you want them to take up the shilo, the parking structure and the parking on pierpont? That is a horrible waste of space! The shilo already takes up way more than it needs to. Build up! Parking below! Pierpont has the potential to become a really great night spot, destination, but it needs smart planning. .. I think it would be more than enough if parking was below and the hotel took up the shilo and extended to pierpont, that would plenty of space for underground parking, but it would be a building with maybe retail or something to keep it vibrant.
I think that a great place for a convention hotel would be where those red american plaza office buildings are. the ones that are like 5 stories tall, really ugly and house the Olive Garden. ... That would look great with some height!
Has anyone been by Trolley lately? What's the progress like over there?

Oh, brother. Many hotels do, in fact, have windows on the side.
In fact, I can't think of one hotel where there's just a huge blank wall on both sides.
Wow, Great pics Steve!! Looks like we have another Pho-tog extraordinaire in our midst. This will be another great project to keep up with at the Gateway. I wonder if Gateway Six will be fast on it's heels? Projects said he thought it would be starting by next month. Also great to see the U. of U. campus. The masterplan is very impressive. I like the planning direction they are taking.

Oh, Comrade, I think you made your point and then some. I think the reason why the Plaza doesn't have windows on its east and west ends is because it was originally a Ho Jo's, cheap by definition, thereby fewer windows because windows cost money. I hope when BYU-SLC takes over the building, they reskin it because it is an eyesore. So is the Shilo. The Shilo gives me the creeps as well because it was the hotel where that psycho threw his kids off the balcony. That should be enough reason to knock that sucker down and start over, although I question whether there is enough land there, including parking (underground, of course) to build a convention-center hotel.

I agree both the Plaza and the Shilo Inn are too ugly to occupy such prime real estate and need replacement. Of the two, I'd want to see Shilo go first.
And just a small correction, the Shilo Inn psycho was a woman (the kids mom).
(Quote from Delts145 on the SLC Development Thread, City Compilation Forum, 06.11.0*)"Thanks for the update on that Projects. Contrary to what some might think, I feel this development will definately happen. It might take a few years before all three towers are up, and the design aspect could also change, but it will happen. With the Proscenium Project, there is a very aggressive developer, combined with an aggressive city, available, unencumbered land, and very importantly, "an outstanding location." "
Delts: I don't get it. The Proscenium project is like a poison ivy rash...just when you think you have it under control and it is not bothering you any more, it pops up somewhere else, just as virulent and annoying as it ever was.
You're probably right about Sandy being a very aggressive city. I'll also take your word that the developer is aggressive. And I agree the land is unencumbered, and the location is probably okay. What I don't understand is where the tenants will come from and with tenants, the money?
The proposed towers look like class A office space and upscale housing. I cannot think of enough tenants interested enough in the Sandy location to take up the office space. Class A office space requires high-end businesses--law firms, accountancies, consulting firms, financial institutions, et cetera, who employee sophisticated employees. What will be the draw, beyond the Broadway-venue theater? No substantial green space or academic institutions. TRAX is a half-mile away, with the freeway three-quarters a mile distant. The area in general is more attune to class B or C offices.
Where will the homeowners come from? Assuming most of the living space will be condos, who will spend a minimum of $250K to live in that environment?
At least in Lehi with the Traverse Ridge development, there will be a great deal of green space and out-of-doors attractions, not to mention an architect who may create a masterpiece on that site.
I am probably missing something. But I cannot think of enough potential tenants in the proposed project to get even one tower built.

I believe the LDS Church does not want a hotel next to Temple Square. I don't know why people are getting so up in arms over this comment, I don't see a problem with them not wanting a hotel there.
I don't see why the church won't want a hotel facing Temple Square. Temple Square would be a great view. CCC will have Tower 1, 6 and 7 all facing Temple Square. So I really don't see how Condos can face temple Sq. But Hotels can't.

The most likely development of all of those blocks along the north side of South Temple, between West Temple and Gateway will most likely involve whatever the needs of the LDS Church happen to be. Those needs will probably include an office tower, condominiums, expansion of the BYU and LDS Business College campuses. The only type of hotel/overnight/extended stay situation that would be attractive for the LDS Church would be something of an in-house type lodging for missionaries, student housing, etc.

I see the buildings being Class A. The reason is that I know a lot of people in Sandy that would move their office into those buildings. With the cost of commute becoming more expensive, this place is prime for all those Sandy residents that own their own business. Last month I was visiting my old neighborhood friends in Pepperwood and they were all excited for this project. They are really interested in moving their office there.
