The Press-Register had this today^. That didn't take long... Sounds great! The other location at Dauphin and Cedar would be great for that section of Dauphin as well.

Went through there earlier this week... some of the overhangs on the departure side are complete while the facade and the interior are still months away. They have a rendering of the proposed changes in the baggage claim, but I didn't think to take a picture.

Virgin America to receive A320neos from Mobile in 2016, reports say

MOBILE, Alabama -- The new assembly facility in Mobile will produce A320neos for Virgin America for delivery in 2016, according to a report on Flightglobal.

Virgin America's chief executive David Cush told Flightglobal 30 of the planes are on order, and the airline is likely to get the order filled in Mobile.

Great news ! I knew that building wasn`t going to sit vacant for long.I have my fingers crossed for the revitalization of St. Louis street.St Louis St has sooo much potential and good bones.

Thanks I just saw the blue (was it tarp?!) on the roof a few days ago and realized they must be doing work there. I had no idea

Sandy Stimpson running for mayor

Prominent Mobile businessman Sandy Stimpson has verified he will indeed run for mayor in 2013.

Stimpson says he told those close to him Friday morning of his decision to seek the mayor’s office and that he intends to file papers later in the day that will make it official.


"I met with my family and friends this morning and told them I would be a candidate, that I am running for mayor,” Stimpson told Lagniappe.

Asked why he had decided to throw his hat in the ring, Stimpson replied, "I can’t stand to sit on the sidelines any longer.”


Stimpson is the second person to publicly declare they will run against two-term mayor Sam Jones in next August’s election. The other is Dr. Doris Brown. Stimpson certainly would immediately be the most likely of the two to present a formidable challenge to Jones’ stated intentions to serve a third term.

Here's a run-down of what's opening between now and November:
T.P. Crockmiers - late September
Pita Pit - late September
LODA Bier Garten - early October
untitled Dauphin and Cedar bar - November?
Moe's BBQ - October/November?
Catt's Avalon 360 - early October
O'Daly's neighboring bars - ?

...good stuff coming! And I hear some rumblings about St. Louis Street redevelopments. Nothing concrete but it sounds promising. Downtown is about to hit the next level.

For years I have said that redeveloping St.Louis street would be the corner stone of revitalization downtown. St. Louise street is one of the main arteries downtown with so much history !

Thats great news about the ramps. I hope the St. Louis Street developments, if they are in the works, have a dense scale. I hope the buildings are mixed with retail/office space on the first floor and residential on the upper floors. There are some great development companies that I have worked with in the past. I which they would do something in Mobile. Plus there needs to be more affordable housing downtown. The target market can't afford the prices now.

Looks like it will be on Monroe street near the civic center and mainly Canal street


St.I`m excited about the redevelopment of St Louis street.The unused AT&T tower downtown should be converted into affordable apartments I think it`s on St.Louis street.

Avalon 360 is already open, Pita Pit is opening Sept 25, Odaly's bars will be mid-October, Biergarten and Crockmier's both by Bayfest

Here is a little more information about Sandy Stimpson. I can't imagine why Holbert failed to mention, for instance, Stimpson's position at the Alabama Policy Institute.

MOBILE, Alabama -- The Downtown Mobile Alliance is pushing for an new approach to the regulation of development in the city’s center, and it has hired perhaps the most famous planning firm in the industry to help see it through.

The alliance hopes to change the pattern of development downtown by changing the guts of the city’s regulatory system, the zoning code.
Mobile, like most cities, employs a use-based code, which regulates the built environment primarily by restricting what kinds of developments can go where.
Use-based codes, Mobile’s included, tend to limit mixed-use development and cater to automobile transportation at the expense of walkability and aesthetic appeal, often mandating large parking lots and deep property setbacks.
In short, Mobile’s code is set up to accommodate strip malls and subdivisions, not an active downtown environment.
