I was watching videos of New York's highline, which i was lucky enough to walk in person a few years ago, and was thinking the stanley park seawall is really devoid of places to just sit and linger along the wall itself and they really could improve it by adding some stepped seating in places or little pieces that jut out over the water similiar to what there is at olympic village. So people can just sit and enjoy sitting. There are long stretches of the wall where there is no place to just sit and relax and take in the view or take a break to recover from so much walking, some areas of the wall just feel so tight and are kinda busy too just stop in the middle of walkers and cyclists etc. they could use some areas to take in the amazing views, what tourists come here for rather than have it all be a blur as you have to walk past some of the most scenic areas. They have some dull benches every once in a while but they need to update and upgrade the wall. The walkway around the olympic village is a great inspiration of what they could aim for around the park.

Thoughts? ideas?

some inspiration

put something like that in a spot like this (i know it would be underwater at times)

or small areas that jut out with this kinda seating

build a small simple deck over an area to admire siwash

something like this

instead of the boring grass

or some lone bench

in this area so you can sit and view the bridge and walkers etc like people do on the highline

thats just some random ideas

I find that the portions of the seawall owned/managed/planned by the City of Vancouver are much better in terms of design/upkeep/amenities compared to those portions managed by the Park Board. I don't know whether it's a question of policy goals, or funding, but it would be nice if the Stanley Park/Sunset Beach/Kits Beach sections got a bit of an upgrade in terms of wayfinding, mode separation, seating, etc.

IMHO the seawall if far more pleasant than High Line which a) Is a victim of its own success b) isn't really that interesting.

yeah for sure but the seawall lacks areas to not walk, its primary focus is walking, I've walked it a few times and you hit a point where you can't walk anymore and there is nowhere to rest and take some time to enjoy the scenes and you end up hating the whole experience.

Uh, why?

I've been on it several times, but what makes it so appealing to high rise lovers? The plantings are mundane and its overcrowded. It's just kind of the urbanist thing du jour.

I agree that the seawall can use more seating options. I used to run and roller-blade around that thing fairly often and always liked to sit down halfway for a beer and there are only so many seats and in the summer they all fill up.

While on this topic the seawall should be expanded / widened. The things is so congested in the summer that it is a turn off, and actually dangerous. A full widening along its length would be great. Would also cost allot less then destroying transportation infrastructure downtown. Something like 3 meters for bikes and 3 meters for pedestrians, or more along the entire length would be a good start. 6 meters each would be even better with seating all over would be even better. The space is there, its on the shore. Just widen it. Do some environmental enhancements and be done with it. What could it cost. 50 mill? It would be worth it for the city.

It gives a better perspective of the towers then you get at street level. As a high rise lover and construction junkie walking the high line around Hudson yards development was orgasmic

They're in the process right now of widening the seawall in False Creek, so something tells me it's an issue they're cognizant of. I feel like they will do this eventually.

I swear I guessed correctly before checking, but on 201st St underneath the south side of Golden Ears bridge. Was one of the few places that made sense.

Are you sure you didn't Google the answer?

I happened to be in the area and drove the small industrial road that runs under the massive bridge approach. It indeed feels like our version of the Lake Shore Boulevard in Toronto.

Less stellar photos from under the ramp.

Nah just went "which bridges are newish" + "which bridges would look like that underneath." Didn't look like Port Mann so that really only left Golden Ears. Plus I knew people were anticipating the connector so that would give you reason to be taking photos there.

Wasn't sure where to ask this but it's the general discussion thread so... anyone know what happened to the skyrisecities.com forum? Maybe it's just me and/or my computer but I haven't been able to get into their forum for a few days now. Some areas like news and skyrisevancouver are still there but the place where I used to make posts on the particular Vancouver building threads is gone. Any link I try just takes me to a blank page. I'm wondering if they got hacked. I've tried various links from Google searches but to no avail.

Looks like it's all fixed now. I was a bit worried considering what's been going on the past few days.
