I'll share a phrase I think of when I see some initial proposals: "rezoning bait". There's no intention or ability to follow-through on an original concept - often for the better, sometimes for the worse - so until a project is before the UDP and ultimately the DPB for its DP, it's a work-in-progress.
For what it's worth, I like the new design. I find it more refined and buildable. I am skeptical that greenery would actually grow up the 'crevice' of the original design, based the limited success of the climbing greenery on Woodwards.

It may be refined and buildable, but it is also somewhat boring and forgettable. And since it lacks vertical boldness and has a flat roof identical in height to its immediate neighbour Jameson House, it is another building lost among the herd and one more brick in the wall of Vancouver's table top skyline.

I guess for vancouver standards this building may appear some what "big and imposing". I hope I live to see the day when this type of statement is reserved for a building of 1 million square feet or more.
The current design has a simpler expression - a plus, especially considering Vancouver's tendency to do do bi-polar expressions like with the old design - but I would love to see more buildings with screened facades from the old design, and would see it as an intelligent, sustianable change from just glass.

The new design is definitely bulky and ugly (way worse than the Cordova street proposal). It is also going to contribute to the tabletop effect of that neighbourhood.
The old one design would've stood out more from the crowd if it were built, and the design would warrant more heads turning to look at.
