Never say never...
Lillehammer is a bit deceiving because events were spread out over a number of towns, all of which being less than 50km away from Oslo. Alpine Skiing was in Kvitfjell, Speed Skating and Figure Skating were in Hamar, some Ice Hockey in Gjovik...kind of like saying Orangeville hosted the Olympics and then had events in Richmond Hill and Brampton.

TSS Rovers have been announced as the newest team for BC's League 1. They'll continue playing out of Swangard Stadium in Burnaby.

They also announced that they plan to follow the German model of supporter ownership. There will be a legal stock purchasing option announced shortly with shares in the team available later this month. They'll be the first team in Canada offering supporter-ownership under this model which typically emphasizes 51% supporter ownership of clubs.

Edited your quote to reflect an alternative reality where Edmonton actually hosted the Summer Olympics!

Countdown is on for the Canada MNT games in Edmonton! Forecast (however early) is calling for high of -2 and a low of -5. I think we can agree that it could be better....but it could also be a lot worse. Will have to see how much snow Edmonton accumulates between now and the game. Can't wait to see the boys in action again!

By defeating Santos last night in the CONCACAF League quarterfinals Forge FC have confirmed their spot in the 2022 Champions League. It's the first time a CPL team has qualified for Champions League and will mean that two of the 16 teams in the competition will be Canadian, the other slot going to the winner of the Canadian Championship (TFC, CF Montreal, or Pacific).

Watch out for bags of piss being thrown. Okay, maybe that only happens during internationals, but the Azteca is as infamous as it gets. And awesome for being so steep and sounding like a beehive.

Jacob Shaffelburg from NS is having a great season for TFC. Like Osorio from about three years ago, the Canadian kid might end up again being their player of the year.

Former England youth international Ike Ugbo commits to Canada
Canada Soccer says 23-year-old will be at World Cup qualifiers in Edmonton
Neil Davidson The Canadian Press November 04, 2021

Former England youth international striker Ike Ugbo, who plays his club football in Belgium for KRC Genk, has committed to play for Canada.

Born in London to Nigerian parents, Ugbo played youth soccer at Brampton East SC and Woodbridge Strikers before returning to England and joining Chelsea's academy at the under-10 level.

Canada Soccer said the 23-year-old will be with the team for CONCACAF World Cup qualifying matches against Costa Rica and Mexico on Nov. 12 and 16 respectively, in Edmonton.

"This is great news for Canada Soccer's men's national team program and the country as he's another young, top-level player with his best football years ahead of him," Canada coach John Herdman said in a statement, "He's chosen to be part of this exciting journey starting with FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifiers. We are looking forward to finally see him in that Canada red jersey."

Ugbo was a two-time UEFA Youth League winner with Chelsea FC (2014-15 and 2015-16) and was a prolific scorer in helping the Blues win a string of domestic Youth Cups. Some of his goals were spectacular, none more so than a bicycle kick in one final against Manchester City.

Part of Chelsea's talented youth program, he then was loaned out to a number of clubs.

He spent part of the 2017-18 season on loan at Championship club Barnsley, returning to Chelsea in January 2018 having made 18 appearances for the Yorkshire club. He then went out on loan to MK Dons in League One, scoring twice in 17 games.

In August 2018, he joined League One side Scunthorpe United with one goal in 14 appearances.

In August 2019, he was loaned to Roda JC in the Dutch second tier where he scored 13 goals in 28 games.

He moved to Belgium's Cercle Brugge on loan in August 2020, scoring 18 goals in 30 matches before making a permanent move to KRC Genk. This season, he has four goals in 12 matches across all competitions.

Ugbo is the latest player to switch national associations in order to carry Canada colours. Others to switch' allegiance since 2018 include Ayo Akinola, Theo Corbeanu, Stephen Eustaquio, Ricardo Ferreira, Cristian Gutierrez, Frank Sturing and David Wotherspoon.

Last night was pretty cool. Leon beat Cruz Azul 1-0 and while it was far from a full stadium Azteca was insane.

This is happening way more now than even a few years ago, no?

That latest guy obviously would rather play for England, but the Three Lions are seriously deep right now with young talent. Too much for Southgate to know what to do with. England could field two very competitive starting XIs.

Now, I'm guessing this could have happened a few more times in the past, but Canada as an alternative just wasn't very attractive so they didn't bother. Now we got some mojo going and I guess guys want to hitch a ride and hopefully get to the WC.

If we get there, some of these guys aren't actually going to make the squad because we have so much more talent now than in the past.

It's mostly Herdman and taking advantage of a better dev system.

Obviously we're not as deep as England but we're still the deepest we've ever been up front. Ugbo has to compete with David, Larin, Buchanan, Millar, Akinola, and Davies when we want to play him up front, to say nothing of Cavalini or Hoilett.

He's also eligible for Nigeria, for what it's worth.

It doesn't hurt when we have one of the best backs in the world, the leading Ligue 1 scorer, and a manager who is actually good.

Fifteen years ago a player like Cavalini would have been our best player. Now he's not even on the bench. Big strides.

Canada Soccer announces FIFA World Cup Qualifiers squad for crucial November matches
canadasoccer.com November 05, 2021

Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team have announced their squad that will play in front of a Sea of Red supporters in Edmonton this month in the Concacaf Final Round of FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. Unbeaten Canada will face both Costa Rica and first-place Mexico in a pair of all important matches at Commonwealth Stadium as they continue to build momentum on the road to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™.

“These home matches present different challenges for which we will need to be ready, but as usual it is one match at a time and with a full house at Commonwealth Stadium we will be pushing for maximum points,” said John Herdman, Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team Head Coach.

Tickets for these highly-anticipated home matches have been selling strong and fans are encouraged to join the Sea of Red with prices starting at just $20 at Ticketmaster.ca. Canada (two wins and four draws for 10 points after six matches) play Friday 12 November against Costa Rica (1-3-2 / 6 points) and then Tuesday November 16 against Mexico (4-2-0 / 14 points).

Both matches kick off at 19.00 local (21.00 ET / 18.00 PT) and will be broadcast live on OneSoccer, including TELUS channel 980, onesoccer.ca, Sportsnet and RDS, including a one-hour Match Day Live show. Fans will find extended coverage across Canada Soccer’s digital channels on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube featuring the hashtag #CANMNT.

With 10 points from their first six matches in September and October, Canada are in third place amongst the eight nations in the Concacaf Final Round, with eight matches to be played between November 2021 and March 2022. From 14 matches, the top-three teams will qualify for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ while the fourth-place team will advance to an intercontinental playoff with an additional opportunity to qualify for Qatar 2022.

“The minimum goal at the end of every window is to finish in the top-three, but these games give us the chance to create separation between us and Costa Rica and the potential of closing the gap on the group leaders Mexico,” said Herdman. “There’s so much to play for, but with our home crowds behind us anything is possible” said Herdman.

Canada and Costa Rica most recently faced each other in the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup Quarterfinals this summer, with Canada the 2:0 winners in Arlington, Texas on goals by Junior Hoilett and Stephen Eustáquio. Before that, the two sides drew each other 1:1 in the group phase of the 2017 Concacaf Gold Cup in Houston and 0:0 in the group phase of the 2015 Concacaf Gold Cup in Toronto.

Canada and Mexico most recently faced each other in the Concacaf Final Round at Estadio Azteca on 7 October, a 1:1 draw after Jonathan Osorio scored the equalizer late in the first half. While Mexico have the upper hand in the head-to-head series between the two countries, the two sides have drawn both previous meetings at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta: a 2:2 draw on 12 October 1997 and a 2:2 draw on 15 October 2008.

“We play for Canada, and it is the fans for whom we are doing this, for those who are as passionate about this sport and country as us” said Herdman. “We want to take this country and our fans to a FIFA World Cup, that is our mission.”

CANADA SQUAD
Two-time Canada Soccer Player of the Year Alphonso Davies will make his long-awaited international debut in his hometown of Edmonton, Alberta, in fact his first games in his hometown since leaving Edmonton at age 14 to join the Vancouver Whitecaps program and then FC Bayern München in Germany where he has won 10 titles including the FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Champions League.

Canada’s squad features players from professional clubs in Concacaf, Asia and Europe, including first-time call-up Iké Ugbo of KRC Genk in Belgium. Ugbo, who previously represented England at the international youth level, is the latest professional player to switch associations to represent Canada at the international “A” level. The 23-year old striker is one of seven players in the Canada squad who currently features in 2021-22 UEFA club competitions, having already featured in three UEFA Europa League matches.

Alongside Ugbo, goalkeeper Milan Borjan is also competing in UEFA Europa League with Red Star Belgrade while Liam Millar is competing with FC Basel in UEFA Europa Conference League. In UEFA Champions League, the four competing Canadians are Jonathan David from Lille OSC in France, Davies from FC Bayern in Germany, and both Atiba Hutchinson and Cyle Larin play from Beşiktaş JK in Turkey. David and Hutchinson, like Davies, are former Canada Soccer Player of the Year winners.

Other Canadian players arriving from clubs based in Europe are Samuel Adekugbe of Hatayspor in Turkey, Derek Cornelius of Panetolikos FC, Stephen Eustáquio of FC Paços de Ferreira in Portugal, Steven Vitória of Moreirense FC in Portugal, and David Wotherspoon of St. Johnston FC in Scotland. Doneil Henry of Suwon Samsung Bluewings in Korea Republic is the lone player arriving from Asia.

From clubs in Major League Soccer, Tajon Buchanan plays for New England Revolution, Lucas Cavallini and Maxime Crépeau play for Vancouver Whitecaps FC, Alistair Johnston of Nashville SC, Mark-Anthony Kaye of Colorado Rapids, Richie Laryea and Jonathan Osorio of Toronto FC, and Kamal Miller, James Pantemis and Samuel Piette of CF Montréal.
