That drive to Pouch Cove made me curious just how disconnected we are compared to other cities. Is there any easy way to find out the farthest you can drive in each direction from your city?

For St. John's:

North: 32.5 km (Biscayan Cove)
East: 15 km (Cape Spear)
South: 152 km (Mistaken Point)
West: 638 km (Deer Lake)
- But then the highway splits and heads either north or south, so:
Northwest: 1,049 km (St. Anthony)
Southwest: 903 km (Channel-Port aux Basques)

Depends on what your criteria for being able to drive is. Other than Iqaluit and Victoria, I think you can say that all of Canada's cities are connected by roads. (even if we have a choke point or two). So they would ultimately have the same extremes.

Lets get really technical - you can drive as far south as a town in Panama and North to Anchorage.

Open public roads are all the way on the Dempster and soon to Tuk on the all weather road. I think the north slope haul road is restricted.

Canada's most northerly road is on time for next fall opening. Inuvik Tuk highway should be an interesting addition for a summer trip.

It is open to the public till Deadhorse. Further access to the actual oil operations (and ocean) require advanced notice and security clearance.

Really enjoying the (relatively) new Autoroute-30 tolled section south of Montreal. Makes driving East-West much easier not having to drive through the Island. I think it saved me roughly a half hour on my drives between Ontario/NB.

I ended up driving Autoroute-55 between A-20 and Trois-Rivieres and was shocked that it wasn't a twinned highway. What's the deal with that? Tons of traffic and backed up vehicles.

It's one of Quebec's super-2 autoroutes. Others are the A-50 that you know between Gatineau and Mirabel, and part of A-20 towards Rimouski.

The A-55's southern segment was a super-2 as well between the A-20 and Sherbrooke. It was twinned a couple of years ago though.

There are pressures for twinning this portion as well but no firm plans except for short segments where they might add passing lanes.

I believe the priority for super-2 twinning in Quebec is probably the A-50 between Lachute and Mirabel airport. This is likely to happen fairly soon.

The super-2 sections of A-50 were designed as a super-2 autoroute in accordance with the latest design standards and with a view to being expanded to four lanes divided eventually.

I am pretty sure that segment of A-55 wasn't. It's just an old two lane highway (albeit a very straight one) that's been upgraded in sections in order to make it a super-2.

I have to think the priority for A-55 should be removing that lone traffic signal. Having a single traffic signal on a road that otherwise operates like a freeway (Super 2 or not) is a decidedly bad idea.

100% agree and it's a shame to have such a thing in a developped Country.

There is also a railway crossing on A50 between Lachute and Mirabel.

I have driven A-50 from Montreal to Gatineau twice, and I didn't like it very much. Very scenic in places, but some of the two lane sections can move very slowly with a long queue, especially if you get stuck behind a truck. Even this year on New Years morning it was like that.

Next time I find myself heading west from Montreal, I'll probably stick to the 417.

I agree. Very nice someplaces, otherwise not very efficient except if you live in say, Montebello and want to go to Montréal or Ottawa. But it's true that the 417 is a much better link.

A50 was already twinned around Montebello wich is not bad too.
