We've had a flurry of groundbreaking news in Austin over the past few weeks. This is a list of the 20 tallest active projects in Austin - all over 500'. The ones with a green stripe are either already underway or have an April construction start date per long term street closure permits filed for construction.

That's 11 total over 500', 6 total over 600' including a supertall.

In addition to the 500'+ towers in my previous post, there are nine more between 300' & 500' either underway or have an April start date per long term right of way closure for construction permits.

It Sure Looks Like the Republic Tower’s Breaking Ground This Spring

Quote:
Ah, ze Republic. A tower like no other. She has many charms, non? Not ze least of which is her fashionable lateness, which has vexed Austin’s skyscraper enthusiasts — sorry, amateurs de gratte-ciel — since the project’s first appearance in 2018.

But after a few breadcrumbs of progress over the last couple of years, including some mysterious (and still unexplained) site plan updates last year and undated crane permits earlier this year, we finally have le pistolet fumant — a permit for the parking lot was filed earlier today by general contractors Harvey-Cleary on behalf of the project’s developers at Lincoln Property Company, requesting the closure of sidewalks all around the tower site, “to allow for the construction of The Republic project located at 401 W. 4th St.” The permit includes a start date of April 18, 2022.

^ Nice! The Republic screams of Pickard-Chilton, in a good way. Is that who designed it?

Great shots! Insane how much that skyline has changed in the last 10 years. And how much it will change in the next 5.

And amazingly, the majority of Rainey's development is just out of those images on the right.

These newer towers in Austin seem so mismatched within themselves. Like is the case with the new supertall, there's no cohesion between the building's bottom, middle, and top, and speaking of the top, it appears unfinished.

I love the height and the density but I wish more care went into the aesthetic of the towers themselves.

For whatever reason, each use of the mixed-use towers seems to have it's own style.

I think it's deliberate design by architects lately. THey are trying to differentiate the programs of the tower visually - the parking/base, hotel, office, & reisdneital are all designed to look different. Whether you love it or hate it, it's definitely a trend that's emerging especially with lots of new buildings proposed for DT austin.

Yeah. It's not a pleasant trend.

Totally agree. There's only a handful of Austin buildings I like, the rest just seem thrown up for the sake of it.
