In the last picture, it's that little island in the middle a bus stop?

Arrived back safe and sound after my 1643 km 3-day drive. I couldn't have picked a better week to take this drive; the weather was perfect. No rain, a bit chilly in the mornings to remind that fall is coming.

As for the roads, nothing too earthshattering, but a few notes:

BC Highway 6 through the Slocan Valley needs some serious love. It isn't a major route and it shows. North of Slocan, it has a 80 km/h speed limit and you don't get to do that often. Because of the curvy nature of the highway, 50-60 is more likely. Any upgrades need to include pullouts as well. A beautiful valley that could be opened up with a better highway.

I think I've fallen in love with ferries. On this trip, I made two crossings:

- Kootenay Lake (part of BC 3A)
- Upper Arrow Lake (part of BC 23)

I enjoyed both of these, nice weather didn't hurt either. Thinking about a trip to Vancouver Island now.

The Trans-Canada is still busy as hell and there was only construction at the snowsheds where LED lighting is being installed.

A fair bit of work is being done on BC 93 through Kootenay National Park. Mostly road-widening.

Good to be back home.

In the zoomed-in version, the maritimes are all wrong. TCH Routes are shown as freeways even when they aren't, and lots of other routes are excluded.

I wonder if it's based on traffic? Although I don't know where they would manage to get traffic data for all of those roads

It's not. It's simply based on roads and roadtypes.

The Youtube police muted the song that I chose for this video, but I am sharing it anyways.

This is the 407/412/401 between Oshawa and Scaroborough.

Nice video. Ontario's standards for highway design need to be copied elsewhere in the country, especially in BC.

Have to say this is the first time I've seen a situation like this where YouTube has disabled the volume control. I was always under the impression that if you violated copyright that they would pull the video. If the audio was your own but not the video would they black out the video and leave the audio?

Looking at the Maritimes, it's a bit curious how the road network is around Fredericton.

https://i.imgur.com/Xck1u4W.png

Moncton to Saint John is fairly dense, and looking up the Saint John river valley up around Woodstock, to Grand Falls, there's a lot of development.

But Fredericton, right in between them all, is pretty sparse. There are the major highways going to the other areas (the roads to Moncton, Miramachi, Saint John, Woodstock, and Harvey), but there isn't really much of a network around Freddy itself beyond the major highways, at least not compared to the other cities.

This is probably mostly because of CFB Gagetown (the blue blob east of Freddy) and the fact that the centre of the province is mostly forest with nothing else to see. (Along with Grand Lake).

It hasn't been mentioned here yet, but the Anthony Henday (216) is now fully open around Edmonton. Completing the full ring in 26 years. Now they just have to upgrade the older sections to meet the cure needs

Highway 20, the Torbay Bypass, which runs up to the northern tip of the Northeast Avalon.

Beyond Pouch Cove, to the very tip, it's a gravel road. Biscayan Cove is up there. It used to be a community but now it's mostly cabins. Most people get there by boat - it has a wharf and whatnot. The surrounding waters are popular during the food fishery.

Passing through Pouch Cove and surrounding areas it's just a regular road.

After Flatrock, it becomes a weird sort of quasi-highway. And it keeps the same number as the old main road, which goes right through Torbay. The bypass is the 20 on the left below. Two lanes, no shoulder, but well-built and maintained. It continues that way until just north of YYT, when it reconnects with Torbay Road, one of the main drags that goes to within a block or two of downtown.

Here's a time lapse of the final leg of the Anthony Henday in Edmonton. Edmonton is officially the first city in Canada with a free-flow ring road! Hooray! Enjoy

That's great. I love all the various things we deem "only in X". They all seem to happen everywhere. "You're unique, just like everybody else".

*****

A video of how bad the top half of that "highway" is, and a better portion through the town of Pouch Cove.

You might be able to get some great editing ideas from this one, Franks. Kidding, of course.
