I'm really not diggin' the floral banners covering the VAG. Why is this beautiful heritage building, one of the few in the area, covered up when there's other hideous buildings (like you know who!) that could get this treatment. Maybe I just hate the print, I dunno.

This is but one more grain of sand in that mysterious mountain called the Irony of Life.

It's a great idea to have plastic bags. In Sydney they just removed all the garbage containers (bomb worries) and they still haven't replaced them 10 years later - there's nowhere to throw your trash in the city.

If you check the green garbage bags in similar rings at the new streetcar station I think that's a "preview" what we're going to see downtown.

I like them. It's just so much more functional because you get to use the full volume of a garbage bag instead of the our pretty cans that are always full.

Paris uses these mostly but I do think they triple bag them. In Vancouver, I think we're gonna need to use 5 bags so people don't rip them.

You've got to admire how Vancouver gets around paying people to sort garbage once it comes in.

I believe they are clear plastic bag holder intended for collecting recyclable items like aluminium can, glass bottle, newspaper etc, not garbage. The city first installed them last year around the downtown area during one of public event to demonstrate that Vancouver is a green city. However I saw a lot of people just dumped all sort of garbage into them even though there was big 'Recycle' sign on the metal pole.

I don't think the garbage sorters wouldn be too happy with the extra workload.

They could very well be replacement garbage containers for the O-lympics. These clear bag holders are more bomb proof than the bin pictured behind the pole.

In Paris they replaced all the plastic garbage cans with translucent plastic bags and have been using them ever since 9/11.
Everybody seems used to it; no big deal.

It would have been more witty if the letters hung over the end of the bars behind them.

They have these on Commercial Drive now, too so it's not just a downtown thing apparently.
